Yoshiki wearing a manga shirt that says "we're "FRIENDS"" "because we're "FRIENDS"" literally with only the word "friends" in quotations but not the rest is too much for me. The irony is off the charts lmao and also him wearing that while walking up to Hikaru and Asako in that position was just... geez There are so many throwaway details in this story like that shirt, the mangaka but also the anime production staff are really going above and beyond. When Asako says "Who are you, really?" the camera is placed behind a fence that creates a visual of a cross in the center of the screen between them, and crosses seem to be a recurring symbol. And leading up to that scene, they added so many details and shots to make you think it was going to be a confession but which also just added tension even if you don't catch on. The fire hydrant can represent a well of emotions, then the traffic mirror that reads ๆณจๆ„ (chyuui, meaning "pay attention") but half of it is cut off, so it only says ๆณจ (chyuu) which means pour (like for example, pour out your feelings) but is also a homophone for "kiss". The traffic mirror in the next unusual shot foreshadows the traffic incident in the flashback scene, but also what Asako learns during that time in her past, how you can see things as both good and bad (the mirrors are facing in two directions), but also plays into the intended but false assumption about a confession because we are shown Asako looking at Hikaru (she likes him) while Hikaru is looking away (he is unaware). All this is relatively subliminal and doesn't even need to be noticed for the scenes to still feel all kinds of ways but adds even more for people who are looking closely. There's a ton of wordplay and visual uses of language that may be lost on people who don't know any Japanese which is really unfortuante. One obvious example is that Hikaru and Yoshiki's names literally start with the words for "day" (hi) and "night" (yo) and also obviously correspond to their visual designs, personalities, and existential grappling with life (Hikaru) and death (Yoshiki), respectively.
