Just a reminder, Mao means cat in chinese, that is why Jinshi said his cat had told him something :) Also some I think he either wanted to get Lihaku the money so he could get his girl and away from Maomao, or in order to get good creds with Maomao for helping Lihaku. Maybe both actually XD

Just like arrowroot gruel doesn't mix well in plain water but becomes more mixable with saliva, the paper quality became worse due to the new oxes the doctor's family recently purchased. When cows drink water, their saliva gets mixed with water and consequently the glue is weakened, so paper becomes more easily torn.
