VINLAND SAGA S2EP9 REACTION [early access]
Added 2023-11-29 14:15:01 +0000 UTCANOTHER TRY NOT TO CRY CHALLENGE [FAILED]
this show straight up got me crying almost the whole episode lol dkldskdsl honestly i wish i could have talked about this episode more, but i had been on a binge-watch and i felt so emotionally drained :') what a heart-wrenching yet hopeful episode. i love this journey that thorfinn is on and seeing both thors and askeladd help him get out of his nightmare was an incredible way to tell thorfinn's story
Comments
reading this part in the manga was chilling and heartbreaking but seeing it animated with voice acting + music + sound design [especially the moment where Thorfinn begins his climb and it switches to b&w].. MAPPA took the story to a whole other level. thank you for sharing your reaction <3~

2023-12-19 03:10:25 +0000 UTCNeat thing I just noticed was that when Pater was talking to Ketil and gave that ring he found was his sleeves. He was covered in mud so he was prob out there trying so hard to find proof it was the retainers. He did all that for our boys which further shows how much he cares

2023-11-30 00:06:01 +0000 UTCReally loved this episode but I will say I love the imagery in the show. Like the zombies aren’t dragging Thor’s down because he already stoned for the people he killed. The fact that Thor’s is clear but what he’s looking at is blurred out.

2023-11-29 23:43:33 +0000 UTCI find it fascinating too that in the end, Askeladd jumps down from that piller to fight once more, but for the purpose of saving Thorfinn. Who I believe he thought had potential to become like Thors, who Askeladd genuinely thought could’ve been his Artorious at first before he refused his offer to lead him. Just how in real life, he once again resorted to violence and died to it just to push forward another Artorious like figure, that being Canute.

2023-11-29 20:20:36 +0000 UTCMy interpretation of the dream Valhalla sequence was a "state of mind". Everyone down there had the Viking mentality. Thorfinn escaped that mental state because he never really enjoyed what he had to do but did it for Askeladd. When he died he had no reason to kill. Bjorns motive to fighting was "i do it becuase i love killing" which mirrors him going berserk in the dream. Askeladd was amongst the Vikings however he saw himself as being above it all hence him being above the collumns. As a descendent of the roman emperor the columns are fitting and is a great call back to episode 10. Thors killed a lot but he changed his life and became a model citizen. They show this by having him be swarmed by the dead just like thorfinn and he is still standing tall. He has accepted the burden and is trying to atone. This episode is a 11/10. Some of the best direction ive seen thanks to Shuhei Yabuta.

2023-11-29 17:48:36 +0000 UTCLove this episode.. Seeing the struggle Thorfinn had to go through but eventually starting to remember what Askeladd and Thors said. This episode is hands down one of the best anime episodes I've seen in terms of character development. The OST, the visuals everything was top notch. "Thorfinn....In the future....After I died.....How do you plan to live the rest of your life ?" Become a true warrior, son of Thors.. Thank you for this amazing reaction Alana and big thanks to Mr Yukimura sensei for doing what not so many else does.

2023-11-29 16:50:28 +0000 UTCI still don't understand how some people find season 2 boring. It's one of my favorite seasons of any TV show even outside of anime
Why It
2023-11-29 16:36:14 +0000 UTCThorfinn in season 2 is what you called peak character development. He became one of my favorite main characters after this episode. And yes this was a turning point for him after he made his oath

2023-11-29 16:26:03 +0000 UTCOut of all the things in this absolutely perfect episode, one little detail I love is that Thors was being dragged down by corpses, too, while wearing his Jomsviking armor with his hand on his sword. We barely got to see it, but he was a lot like Thorfinn in his youth, and despite the symbol he became, Thors didn't become a true warrior in the end. In his final fight, he relied on his sword, even though he always preached that a true warrior doesn't need one. And he knew it, he said to Askeladd that he's not yet a master. And we get to see that visually here. It gives even more weight to Askeladd's dying words, "Don't stay in a damn boring place like this forever. Go further than Thors did, that's your true fight." And Thorfinn didn't understand that until now. Thorfinn has to climb and carry the souls of his victims to paradise. He has to climb like his father did and reach the summit like Thors was never able to. From here on, Thorfinn's on the path to becoming a true warrior. And Thors walking away at the end of the episode in pride for his son. He doesn't need to watch over his son anymore; he has nothing left to tell him. Thorfinn is finally joining him on his walk to paradise. It was just a perfect final coda to this masterpiece of storytelling. Peak fiction. Anime of the year 🐐

2023-11-29 15:31:14 +0000 UTCThe Vinland Saga piano triggers a Pavlovian effect in me, where every time I hear it my tear ducts start opening. This show crazy

2023-11-29 15:03:23 +0000 UTC“fight your true battle”— “become a true warrior” I’ve just now noticed that what Askeladd was telling Thorfinn during the “valhalla” sequence mirrors his final words to him in season 1. And it makes perfect sense since it all happened in Thorfinn’s head. I think it was a representation of him finally understanding what Askeladd meant and seeing it in a new perspective— subconsciously reconstructing pre-existing memories and viewing it in the absence of revenge. And the same goes with Thors in this case. Both were so integral to Thorfinn’s character that their last words never left him. Which is why I think everytime we saw Thors in season 1 and in this episode it’s the same message again and again (you have no enemies)

2023-11-29 15:03:13 +0000 UTCThis is a 10/10 episode for me. Even having watched this dozen of times in the last several months, I still get emotional. The writing in this anime is truly next-level, and it was this episode that made me like Vinland Saga more than Attack on Titan.

2023-11-29 14:35:15 +0000 UTCProbably my one of if not my favorite episode in the season out of all the amazing episodes it has. Thorfinn's character arc is simply a masterpiece and this season made him one of my favorite protagonists in general.
