ENTRY 05: THE GIANTS' PATHS

Welcome, dear giants watchers, to the land of the Guardians, where every step they take echoes throughout the ages, and shape the very world they tread upon. Today, we’ll talk about the fascinating phenomenon of the ‘Giants’ Paths’, the colossal ground trails that crisscross the land off Guarida and carry a legacy of centuries.

In our world we humans find ourselves living beneath the towering presence of giants, colossal beings whose sizes easily dwarf mountains and heights may reach up to the hundred meters tall. These ageless beings exist since the dawn of time and have ruled over Earth since then. With their every move influencing the landscapes below, as they travel the lush forests, serene prairies and majestic mountains, their steps set off a remarkable terraforming process under their incredible weight, each step compressing the soil down to a thin layer under their building-sized feet.

The Giants Paths are a network of immense trails left by these colossal beings over countless human generations. These trails may seem ordinary from afar, resembling a typical ground path one would find in a tranquil forest or meadow. However, the scale of these paths is astounding in person, akin to the grandest avenues on our human scale.

While these paths present a magnificent spectacle, they also pose a significant danger to human settlements and unwary travelers. Once villages and cities full of life had to be evacuated and relocated to escape the trampling force of the giants. Roads, houses and buildings have been inadvertently grinded to dirt over the centuries by the daily strolls of these colossal beings. Only a few ruins of these settlements remain standing to this day.

Nowadays, human settlements located near these paths are well-aware of the giant’s presence and have adapted their structures and way of life to coexist with the towering beings.

PATHS, WHAT ARE THEY FOR AND WHERE THEY GO

The Giants’ Paths, while imposing and formidable to us, serve as an indispensable network for the colossal giants that roam among us. For the giants, these paths are akin to our human roads, connecting key locations within their vast domains. By following these routes, they navigate through dense forests, ascend the tallest mountains and traverse boundless prairies with remarkable ease and familiarity, guiding the giants through the intricate landscapes and farthest reaches of the territories they call home.

The paths connect several points of interest within the giant’s territory, the giant’s personal places and safe-heavens, the borders of their domains and human settlements dispersed across the land.

In the case of the Great Builder, his paths hold a particularity: a few of them wind towards the three major human cities located near the oceanic shores of Guarida. These paths interconnect and reach deep into our cities. In the case of the city of [Norte], the biggest of the three, the path merges with the Great Plaza located at the center of said city, where the most important human buildings of the nation of Guarida stand.

His other routes stride towards the territory’s northern borders and the savage desert to the south. They also extend deep into his forbidden forest and lead up to the central mountain, where he resides, overseeing the entirety of the coastal side of Guarida.

However, History have proven that the most important usage the giants have to these paths is when danger struck. Proving to be the perfect road to dash towards disaster, to prevent major damages when nature’s wrath strikes or to defend the borders of their territories from foreign giants looking for trouble.

CROSSINGS AND WARNING PRECAUTIONS

When faced to the need to cross these monumental trails, you should reach your nearest crossing point. These designated crossings are fortified with sturdy foundations and have warning signals that activate as soon as a giant approaches, offering a crucial buffer of protection. However, it is highly advised to pause and leave the area until the giant passes by.

Time have proven that any roads or tunnel-like structure as a bridge for humans to cross has been futile, as they were easily leveled by the giants steps either by accident or unwittingly. Same case goes for underground tunneling, which risks of collapsing is absurdly high. For that reason, is best to just steer clear of the paths and ensure a safe and uninterrupted giant’s passing.

Here on the southern and eastern part of Guarida there’s a designated ‘giant traversing time’ for our giant, the Great Builder. While the exact timings may vary across regions, these times generally coincide with the early morning hours and the sunset.

WATCHPOINTS, A PLACE TO CHILL AND WATCH

Near the Giants’ paths, a group of safe establishments and watchpoints has emerged, offering both protection and a front-row seat to the spectacle that unfolds every other day when the giant crosses the Giants paths.

Strategically situated at a safe distance from the paths, these sanctuaries offer a secure place for the local communities. The sturdy watchtowers purpose-built to withstand the thunderous vibrations that accompany a giant’s stroll through the path. From these vantage points, caretakers, researchers and aficionado onlookers gather to witness the giant’s journey through the land of Guarida, marveling at the spectacle while ensuring their safety.

They also usually have a cafeteria in there. Order a drink and eat a snack while you are it, and make sure to hold onto your cup when the trembling commences!

The strides of the Great Builder’s down the Giants’ Path are a sight to behold! Awe inspiring and adrenaline driving for sure.
