From Memory Alpha: "The transporter was depicted as the only mode of transport between a planet and the ship because this episode was written and filmed before the existence of the hangar deck and shuttlecraft were established, even though both of these locations are clearly built into the studio model of the Enterprise as seen in the episode. As the lack of a shuttlecraft was almost immediately pointed out as a plot error, production and writing staff later stated that perhaps the shuttlebay was simply out of service for repairs during this episode, which would explain why the crew did not use shuttles to rescue their comrades."

2023-09-10 05:44:09 +0000 UTCA very good and underrated episode. and your right, I'm sure Shatner had fun in doing this one. :) Transporters are scary for a lot of people, despite all the safeguards built into the process. McCoy is not the only one who dislikes them. I did see Grace Lee Whitney (who played Janice) at a Star Trek con a number of years ago, before her passing, and she was a great speaker - and also made it a point of saying that she liked the uniform as well.
