She overthrew the previous God of death who she thought wasn't doing his job back in the Age of Arcanum (I believe) prior to the start of the Calamity (those gods fighting that Vax keeps seeing).

Originally it was Dr. Dranzel(Dr. Dra a play on Dr. Dre) discovered him and he became part of dranzel's troupe. Eminem has a daughter named Hailey, you now know that Scanlan has a daughter named Kaylee. Even the alliteration name, Scanlan Shorthalt was an allusion to Marshal Mathers.

If you rewatch the series, Scanlan's been motivated into action when children were in harm. I'm sure they're saving his backstop for THAT moment ( the critters know exactly which), so I'll leave it there.
