Uncut Death Note 36 & 37

Comments

I would LOVE to see you make comparisons and between the anime and the manga once you finish reading it!

collin!

To his very end, I don't believe Light regretted his choices. 🤔 At the brink of death, he shouted for Misa and Takada, but I doubt it was out of real love. Light was just desperate. He was terrified of dying, but even more so, he couldn't stand the thought of losing. It's ironic that the final image he had before his end was of L. Just like when L passed away, the last thing he saw was Light looming over him. When I first read the manga and watched the anime, so many years ago, I was in shock for several days and I kept thinking about all the moral quandaries and twisted intricacies that had to go through the author's mind to come up with this story and from time to time, when I see inexplicable violence or nonsensical deaths in the world, it makes think that the author might have created the character of Light explore what would happen if somebody could take on the mantle of removing evil from a rotten world What do you think were the author's motivations or mindset when he wrote Death Note? ✍🏻 While I think the story is pretty timeless, the original comic was released 20 years ago, from 2003 to 2006. There are a number of plot points that are pretty specific to this period - they have the internet but no social media, smart phones don't exist yet, people mainly get news from the TV, ect. How do you guys think the story would change if it was set in the modern day instead? Or do you think it would play out mostly the same? 🤳🏻 In 2019 the authors of Death Note made a short story sequel to Death Note. It's only 88 pages but it answers some of your questions you may have about what happens later to the world. In it Ryuk finds someone new to give the Death Note to and they use things like Twitter and facial recognition software in pretty creative ways. Its not necessarily great video reaction material, but you can check it out here if you want: https://nonsolomanga.altervista.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/oneshot-Never-Complete.pdf (If you've never read Japanese comics before do a bit of googling as they aren't read left to right like English comics) Thank you for all of your reactions on this amazing story, it has been a pleasure to rewatch this anime with you. Keep on falling into the rabbit hole that is anime❣️

In gymnastics term it's a shame that Death Note DID NOT stick the landing or ending! Light making uncharacteristic mistakes was too convenient and bad writing in my opinion. It would have been better to end the show after Light killed L. Personally I don't think Light should have been given an easy out via the Death Penalty but made to suffer via life in prison. So my alternate ending would not have Ryuk kill him but have Light take his place. Death Note Season 2 would be Light as a Shinigami and we can learn if Light had any regrets if at all.

This episode gives me such a new respect for Matsuda. Matsuda turning on Light is one of the top moments in the anime. It also shows how similar Matsuda really is to Light. Throughout the show Matsuda displays a bit of empathy toward Kira and in the end he attempted to murder someone because he thought he was evil.

I don’t think Mikami really made a mistake. Light told him when they first spoke on the phone he was being watched and couldn’t move freely. Light’s reluctance to share info with Mikami is why he lost. Light could have texted him that he would take care or Taki and there would have been no way for Giovani to find the notebook.

Critical

Technically it was because of Light's hubris and arrogance.

I didn’t really like that Light’s downfall was in large part due to a mistake Mikami made. I wish it had been a situation in which Near directly beat him at something intellectually. Congratulations for finishing though!! I’d personally rate Death Note a B- or C+ because of all the writing issues and *problematic* parts, but it was a different time I guess. I still believe that Light is a psychopath, but it is possible for a psychopath to do good in the world and not necessarily be a killer; I think he would’ve become a ruthless L-like detective going hard with a fairly black-and-white sort of justice if he hadn’t found the death note. Really interested in what you think of manga and musical light who are in my opinion both fundamentally different. Also, if you feel bad for Matsuda just imagine how Light’s mother is feeling at the end: Her son was Kira and is now dead, her husband is dead and her daughter has had her life completely destroyed by trauma. She must feel so alone…

Just wanted to say I loved the reactions to this series! It’s an A- on my ranking list, which I’d say roughly translates to 8-8.5, so I was glad to see we have similar analysis / tastes! Doesn’t look like anyone’s mentioned it yet, but I believe Light dying halfway up the staircase is meant to be symbolic that he can reach neither heaven nor hell.

The cut content / alternate content from Relight stuff is interesting - I think the murders of the SPK feel way more terrifying in Relight (where it's Kira + his acolytes) killing the SPK not Mello) - this is the clip of that same scene from Relight - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwYXAuIlGCY

Dagmar Makara

P.S. There is a "sequel" manga of sorts with new characters and some old ones - the Death Note One-Shot (short-story) manga, which follows Near in... 2019 I think

I remember when I first saw this when I was 13, I really wanted Kira to win 🤪🤪, now seeing it again alongside you I just wish that things would've ended differently 😞😞

I absolutely loved the 2nd half of the show, including Near & Mello

Funeral scene isn't cut content, it's later added content. It doesn't exist in the manga either. I don't know where that misconception of cut content originates, but it's a scene from recut special episodes with removed and added content, somewhat altering few events to keep the specials relatively short.

Now that we're here I can finally say this is the reason I was glad they cut the funeral scene. I think Light's breakdown and maniacal laugh is perfect for this scene. It would have undercut the moment if he had done it sooner.

Both together?!? I'm so glad I happened to check Patreon rn.

Thank you for the amazing journey! I will watch your reaction to the last episodes tomorrow
