Oh that’s a great point! I also agree it’s fascinating, the way the demons are written is so refreshing. They are not evil as that would require a true understanding of human social constructs which they lack, and they are also not misunderstood and humanized like in many other stories. They are more similar to wild animals that simply use deception as a means to hunt prey, but they are clearly more complex demonstrating things you mentioned like “pride” or even “love” (for magic) which adds to why they are so interesting in this world.

I was wondering why it flashed by so quickly but it makes sense that it's a visual display of just how fast that time frame was in comparison to the other aspects of her life. That's such a beautiful way of showing how even though that time was so short - the impact they have had in that 10 year period now has a life long impact on Frieren!

It's so fascinating because it's also a human quality too showing the similarities between demons and humans in that moment. The fear of appearing weak and being willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of pride and power! Honestly this show is phenomenal. I adore it so so much!!

2024-12-11 21:35:34 +0000 UTCThe way this show handles the passage of time is like nothing I have seen before. In this episode we have a time lapse from when Flamme died to when Frieren met the hero party that lasted 50 seconds and covered roughly 1,000 years. After that we have a 0.5 seconds time lapse representing the 10 years she spent with the hero party. It really brings down the point that 10 years were merely a flash in her life, yet they keep affecting her so much.

2024-12-11 21:30:47 +0000 UTCI like what you said about how so many little details in this (ex: the spell to create a field of flowers, etc.) show continue to take shape as we learn more about the world and characters. I appreciate how this show respects your intelligence by often "showing" instead of "telling" and allows you to re-contextualize as you piece together connections and information. There's a lot we can revisit now that we've learned about Frieren's past. I remember when I first read/saw the first episode I assumed Frieren's initial cold demeanor was a sign of two things; the first is that she has grown numb to outliving so many companions over the years and the second being that it was a defense mechanism (which I remember you also talked about) to prevent her from growing attached and experiencing pain. However, from the flashbacks with Flamme, I realized my first assumption was completely wrong. Flamme tells her to live in obscurity (which you impressively pointed out and elaborated on) - strategic advice to help her eventually fool powerful demons and kill the demon king - and we see the montage of her living hundreds, perhaps even a full 1,000 years in solitude. It wasn't that she had too much experience and has grown numb to it, it was precisely the opposite. Aside from whatever connections in her village and Flamme, it appears she had nothing significant between those and the time she met Himmel/Eisen/Heiter. So of course, she wouldn't be able to fully appreciate and grasp the importance of the interactions with them, especially after getting used to the mindset developed after hundreds of years of living alone. I think the short flashes we see after the flashback with Himmel is a way of representing how she perceived her time with her party as so short. There's also a panel in the manga from the first chapter I'm shocked they omitted, basically it shows Frieren inside the church at Himmel's funeral wide-eyed in shock/surprise with tears flowing down her face, almost as if remembering how to feel this emotion that was once long buried ages ago (in the anime it cuts out her face above her mouth, and we see her first tears come during actual sobs when burying Himmel). Another cool little detail we can revisit now is Lugner's line, "I despise geniuses, they lack the beauty of accumulated effort." It's so ironic with the information we get regarding Frieren's past. Frieren may be a genius, sure, but the skill she honed over a literal 1,000 years was a basic skill a mage of any caliber could practice, mana suppression. I'm sure one's talent would affect the rate at which you could improve at that, but it is indeed so ironic that she defeated Aura with nothing but simple, accumulated effort. Can't wait for more, I'm so spoiled with you reacting to both Frieren and AOT at the same time haha :)
