I've always found it so poignantly sad that Lelouch started EVERYTHING, all of this, for Nunnally, for her happiness - but the only one left *without* happiness is, in the end, Nunnally. Everyone else gets their happy ending except her. Lelouch must have been aware of that, and chosen to do what he did anyway. Hits you right in the heart.
