They are still protectors, but they function as gatekeepers to the elemental planes(think hell but instead of demons, fire elementals for the fire plane, water for water, etc.). They are more of a collective/groups of people than a nation in itself too, the gates to the different planes aren't "close". So they rarely interact with other people including their own outside their community unless necessary.
