I'm so glad to have finally gotten to work on a Mystery Box reward! Really hoping this will be the first of many.

The "Mystery box" is a new type of reward I included in StarStickers this year, in which a patron can only give me their character to draw, but they can't choose how I draw it. I could chose to do this in whatever way I see fit - from drawing the character as another species, to painting it with traditional media, to going full abstract. A reward only for the daring!

For my first MB I decided to go with turning this patron's FFXIV character into a mermaid. I was inspired by the OCs blue and green hair and really wanted to make that the centerpiece of the image.

This did turn out more detailed than I expected these rewards to be, but at the same time I haven't had such a good time painting something in a long time. I really had a blast working with this explosion of color and I'm really looking forward to coming up with new ideas for upcoming rewards!

As always, your thoughts are more than loved. =]

Mystery Box is an awesome idea. As for this commission, I love so much about it that I don't quite know where to start. The iridescent quality of the colors grabbed my attention first. The pose is so unique and her expression is just striking. Beautiful work!

Hey Pun! Honestly? It was a happy little accident. I was masking the hair to paint the gradient over it and I inverted the mask, which left those gaps invisible over a very bright under layer. And so I felt like that felt right- like windows into the wider ocean. Same thing happened with the lines - I accidentally switched the lineart to Divide and suddenly it was glowing, so I just rolled with it!

I'm so in love with the iridescent look the torso details have and how that is included in the glow they have! Can I ask about why you thought to leave sections of the hair (or hair gaps) the solid light blue? I absolutely LOVE it but I would never have thought about painting it that way and it's opened me up to new techniques I'd like to try :3
