EARLY ACCESS: The Muppet Movie

EARLY ACCESS: The Muppet Movie

Speaking of Steve Martin and Madeline Kahn, don't forget Mixed Nuts for Jingle Beans!

Cass&Jason

The answer to 'What is Gonzo' is answered in "Muppet's in Space" film :) Enjoy!

Michael Parker

You’ll be glad to know there’s the TV series and several movies to watch. And yes, you missed lot of high profile cameos. The guy right at the end was Orson Welles, who is one the greatest actors, directors, writers, and producers to ever work in theatre, radio, television, and film. The guy with Madeleine Khan was Telly Savalas.

Chris Crowther

Muppets Treasure Island and Muppets Christmas Carol are my two favourite muppets movies.

Chris Crowther

Different stokes for different folks :)

Mike C

I think Gonzo is a toucan

Katina Corbin

Oh hard disagree, that's my favorite Muppet movie

Joseph Ricks

While i'd love to see you react to the next Muppet movie, The Great Muppet Caper, I almost think you should jump ahead a little and react to Muppet Treasure Island. It's a pirate adventure movie adapted from the book Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, and it stars Tim Curry as Long John Silver. It's so much fun and I feel like if you watched it, it would jump up to one of your top favorite Muppet movies. Like I would bet it'd be in your top 3 after you've seen all the Muppet movies.

Jeb Manning

I'm so glad we finally got back to The Muppets. I do hope you'll react to more Muppet movies and maybe even seasons of The Muppet Show. I love this one. It's tied with The Great Muppet Caper as my favorite Muppet movies. I think the Muppets are always fun, funny, and very wholesome, and The Muppet Movie is the epitome of those things. I also think, from a technical and special effects standpoint, it's really cool and a visual treat. It's amazing the stuff that Jim Henson and his Creature Shop were able to pull off. Great reaction, as always.

Jeb Manning

For what Gonzo is: There's a recent (compared to The Muppet Show and these films) movie where he is found to be an alien, but IMO at least, it's more a playful film playing off the long-running joke that no one knows what he is. Not an actuality. Gonzo is "a weirdo". No one knows, but accepts him, for whatever it is he is. I can't recall, and wanted to mention seeing your surprise and fun over it, if during the Christmas Carol anyone let you know: While Sesame Street was aimed at children, The Muppet Show was aimed for young adults and heavily adults. It was much more mature, often rather saucy, and the interviews done with the Muppets from it were often outright "mature humor", so to speak. (Gonzo in one admits he wants to do Piggy and has a thing for feet/shoes...... I was in love with the fact you didn't know Gonzo's primary romantic/sexual preference is chickens. He has a long-term partner of one named Camilla, seen here).... Often very meta as they are people and not imaginary. The camera tests for this film with Kermit and Fozzy, then Kermit and Piggy are hilarious in their self-awareness. Oz and Henson stay hidden and are, as John Oliver put it, "Daniel Day-Lewis deep" into character... the best description over the years I've heard lol. Glad you found this fun and it was great seeing you get so engaged at various points. Little bit of personal silly: I, for the first time in years, road to an event with a several hour road-trip with two friends who are a couple last year. Get the car packed and sticking into my head the song "Moving Right Along" suddenly jumped into my brain and I made a joke about it. We got on the road and they put in their "starting a road trip playlist" that they use to start every trip and low and behold what started it off. It was a moment where you are solidly reminded why people are your friends....

Rumpus Parable

One of my favorites - Rainbow Connection is an amazing song and lost out on the Academy Award for Best Song to a song from Norma Rae that I guarantee almost no one knows. The gag with the woman who popped up when Kermit said myth, myth was it was being misheard as miss, miss - a young lady. Her name is Carole Kane but she is a prominent character actress who has been in The Princess Bride (Miracle Max's wife), Addams Family Values (Grandmama), and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as Kimmy's landlord. Can't wait for The Great Muppet Caper and Muppets Take Manhattan. Honestly, the only true miss for me was Muppets in Space and I firmly believe that the last film, Muppets Most Wanted, is severely underrated. My grandchildren and I love that one and have a blast watching it.

Cristina Collins-Armstrong

The Big hairy Muppet is Sweetums. Bob Hope was the ice cream man. Paul Williams Little Enos from Smokey and the Bandit was the piano player in the bar. Famous songwriter and actor. You'd be surprised

Mr Marvelous

Before the Muppets were purchased by Disney, they were always making crossover appearances with Sesame Street and vice versa since both properties shared the same muppeteers. Muppet Family Christmas and The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson are two specials that come immediately to mind. Great Muppet Caper is next and, oh damn, I remember having a huge crush on the villain of the movie and being so damn envious of Miss Piggy having his thirsty ass all over her. In fact, I really hope you do Christmas Eve on Sesame Street this year for Hallobeans because not only does Kermit appear in that special, it’s also funny as hell.

Chelsea

This movie always gives me BIG cries. I'm GenX and Jim Henson was such a huge part of my childhood. Everyone who was anyone did a guest appearence on The Muppet Show (maybe a consideration for tv shows in the future) and when Jim died...part of my childhood died with him. For a long time, they talked about how Kermit had lost his voice and they did a show where the Muppets learned who Jim was and came to terms with his passing. They also did a tribute show for him and it was incredibly emotional. As soon as I heard the first notes of Rainbow Connection, I could feel the emotions rising. I've seen this movie so many times that I know every song and nearly every line by heart. :) A few notes on the movie - the Hare Krishna's are a Hindu religious organization started in the 60s. They advocated the pursuit of mystical devotion through repetitive chanting. The whole thing about Gonzo is that nobody knew what he was...it was widely speculated about by the other Muppets. Oh -- and a correspondence course is what we called distance learning back before the internet. You literally *corresponded*. The courses were done by mail.

Cosmic Slice

Or not. The only 2 skippable Muppet movies, imo, are Muppets in Space, and Muppets Most wanted. The 2011 film is fine, but much better if you’ve immersed yourself in the Muppet Show tv series.

Mike C

Same. All I can think about is those frogs with tiny crutches…

Mike C

If nothing else, she'll see him in a Bond movie

JHB

This movie came out when I was just a kid, and to this day I have never eaten frog legs because of it.

Neil Silverman

Telly Savalas was just the coolest back in the day.

Echo Moon

Then the TV show Legion changed it right back with a terrifying rendition of Rainbow Connection.

TheSingulatarian

She saw them at the airport in the movie Airplane.

Chel Van Hel

correspondence course = remote learning via snail mail

JHB

Hey, nobody mentioned Telly Savalas as the guy at the bar on Kermit's other side from Madeline Khan. Has Ashley seen him in anything yet? I gather she hasn't seen any episodes of Kojak, but he was in a few movies.

JHB

Sweetums first appeared in a Muppet tv movie called "the Frog Prince" as a troll henchman of the evil witch.

JHB

Yeah, Deliverance changes your take on banjos forever, but Rainbow Connection helps take the edge off.

JHB

Dom Deluise and Charles Durning were also in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”

Ian Jones

Better yet for Ashleigh - Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin in All of Me

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

PAUL MASSON! I forgot those.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

the song rainbow connection is weird in that pretty much everyone loves it. you can like country or rap or heavy metal doesn't matter you gonna like the rainbow connection.

Elisa H.

You gotta watch Muppets In Space for the full story on Gonzo, and also for a great funk soundtrack

Joseph Ricks

Yeah, I would have guessed Ashleigh might notice when he spoke, but it’s alright. The audience that would just ‘know’ the voice is sadly shrinking.

Matthew Periolat

I recognized him as a kid, but only because at the time he was in those tv commercials where he said "We will serve no wine, before its time."

Michael Cruse

Yes! Like The Road to Morrocco and other road movies with Bob Hope.

Stewart Shutler

All the cameos: Dom Deluise you saw him as the Gay movie director in Blazing Saddles Paul Williams is a famous song writer you saw him in Smokey and the Bandit. James Coburn was in Sister Act II Edgar Bergen, you probably wouldn't know him unless you knew him. Elliot Gould From MASH Bob Hope most famous for his Road to movies with Bing Crosby and his TV specials. Milton Berle, you saw him in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He was a huge TV star in the 1950s. You picked up on Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Madaline Kahn and Steve Martin. Cloris Leachman was the secretary looking good here she usually liked to ugly herself up for Mel Brooks movies. She was a beauty contest winner. Orson Wells Citizen Kane Carol Kane you know her from The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt with I believe you watched on your own time. And the big monster from the car lot was called Sweetums.

TheSingulatarian

Gonzo is known as a whatever. But we do get a glimpse at what he is in the movie Muppets From Space which I know you’ll thoroughly love because it came out when we were 5! Lmao! More Muppets!

Gio Vidrio

That voice though.

TheSingulatarian

Next up is “The Great Muppet Caper”(1981)then “The Muppets Take Manhattan”(1984) where Kermit tries to stage a Broadway musical.

Richard Stegman Jr.

To be fair, in this movie he looks nothing like he did at any point in Citizen Kane.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

No recognition of Orson Wells from Citizen Kane.

TheSingulatarian

You like Steve Martin? Try "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid"!

R Kelly Coker

Richard Stegman Jr.

So we just have to get movies on the polls that they starred in!

Just to answer the questions about cameos that you asked during the video: Bob Hope played the ice-cream man at the fair who gives Fozzie the Honey ice cream and the Dragonfly Ripple ice cream for Kermit. The Hollywood producer at the end was played by Orson Welles who wrote, directed, and starred in Citizen Kane. The woman who appears when Kermit say "Myth" and says "yeth?" is Carole Kane, who you know as Miracle Max's wife from Princess Bride. The Hollywood producer's secretary was Cloris Leachman, who you know from Young Frankenstein as Frau Blucher. There are many other cameos from people who you are not familiar with, but the man who the film was in memory of, Edgar Bergen, was the ventriloquist with the dummy Charlie McCarthy who you said made you uncomfortable. Edgar Bergan died before the movie was released. It was a lovely moment as the Muppets are the next incarnation of puppets, and it was very much a passing the torch.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Ralph was one of the first muppets.

TheSingulatarian

So many golden age stars that Ashley has no idea who they are.

TheSingulatarian

Edgar Bergen the Ventriloquist. Father of Candace Begen. He was a ventriloquist on the radio. Yes, a ventriloquist on the radio.

TheSingulatarian

Charles Durning played almost the same part in O' Brother Where Art Thou.

TheSingulatarian

Hare Krishna is a Hindu religious cult that mostly used to bother people in airports for money.
