The extended version might be an hour longer but it is far superior in my opinion. Not only do they show you what happened to Sarumon and Grimer but they also give you more character development for Merry and Pippin. And gives you more context to Faramir and his father, there's a scene showing that Faramir and Eowyn meet while recovering and it's established that they get together which I was so happy about, I loved both of these characters and they both deserved happiness.
