EARLY ACCESS: Miracle on 34th Street

Unpopular opinion: It's a Wonderful Life is better than Miracle on 34th Street.  Fight me on it.

EARLY ACCESS: Miracle on 34th Street

Comments

As I said above, I think it's a must-see for fans of John Candy, simply because it's such a different role for him. And Ashley is a John Candy fan. I, too, would like to see it go back on a poll.

Well, there _is_ the Post Office doctrine in law. Essentially any correspondence handed over to the US Post Office is considered "sent" for legal purposes. This tends to be invoked when there's a dispute over payments and when they were made. And there's the "trust your government" aspect: if the FBI says you're a spy for the Chinese, you _are_ a spy for the Chinese, even if the information you're accused of handing over did not actually exist at the place you worked, so you had zero access to it.

This is "John Candy as you've never seen him". He's pretty much the same sort of character, except played realistically rather than comically. A must-see for John Candy fans.

To those mentioning Only the Lonely, it was on one or two of Ashleigh's early Patreon polls and didn't gain any traction. Might be curious to see down the line, after it's been at least a year since it was last on one, how it would fair. How much of a turnover of patrons is there, plus there are a lot more patrons in general on here.

IMHO It's a Wonderful Life IS a better movie than Miracle, but I love 'em both. I also vote for "Only the Lonely." Good movie, great cast, good story.

Pffft.

Jill Peterson

...I thought she did? :-/ That might just be my mistake, though. But she might've seen Thelma Ritter in something else, as well -- she was in a LOT.

Matt Blanchette

...because the original film isn't campy so much as it is just really, really gory and bloody and unpleasant? :-/ Crooked Santa murders his dad and rapes his mother, and that's just the opening 20 minutes of the film? I think Ashleigh would be horrified.

Matt Blanchette

I would add "Jamaica Inn", also with Laughton, and directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

Matt Blanchette

Eh; it's New Deal logic, I suppose... (And he won an Oscar for it.)

Matt Blanchette

You are right it is not a great, or even good, legal argument, but it was an out for the judge he gladly took.

Mike LL

“Ooh, I’m Matt. I’m right and everyone needs to know so I can feel like a man!”

Jill Peterson

We know it’s the sequel. She knew I would laugh, and I sure did! Why did you feel your comment was necessary?

Jill Peterson

I would add The Hunchback of Notre Dame to that list.

Bill Bevins

I know but it’s still a part of the franchise. Don’t remember anything memorable from the first film.

Dooly

How would she know Thelma Ritter? Has she seen Rear Window yet?

Eric Janssen

If you loved Maureen O’Hara then there are two movies you must watch with here that I know you’ll Iove. The Quiet Man romantic funny and packed with all the punch you can take lol. Second with one of your ex husbands John Candy.. only the lonely.

Michael Taylor

Edmund Gwenn is a great Kringle, but somehow, I just never followed the legal argument of “The Post Office is always right! 📨 “

Eric Janssen

John Candy and Maureen OHara did a movie together. 1991 Only the Lonely. Another Chris Columbus film. You have sad Feels for John

David Penney

People sometimes forget that old Potter got to keep all that 💰 he found in the newspaper and never really gets punished for being a greedy asshole.

Paul Stelter

Miracle is a great feel-good Christmas movie, but IAWL gives ALL the feels.

Paul Stelter

Not going to fight you .. everyone has the right to be wrong ;)

Barry Hammock

You forgot Thelma Ritter. And Maureen O'Hara!

Matt Blanchette

No, that's the sequel.

Matt Blanchette

Yes you looked up Fred from I Love Lucy but, the little girl was Natalie Wood who drowned off of the coast of Catalina Island in 1981 during a break from the production of her comeback film Brainstorm with Christopher Walken. Robert Wagner was a person of interest in the investigation of Wood's death. One other actor you might have missed-- the mail room seen- the man sorting the mail was Jack Albertson (grandpa) in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Garbage day!

Dooly

Silent Night, Deadly Night is a good movie for your killer Santa idea. Fun 80s horror for Christmas!

Jill Peterson

Miracle on 34th Street was not billed as a Christmas movie when it came out. It was released in May.

Lisa Nygaard

Unpopular opinion, but I don’t like this movie.

Dooly

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion at all. It's a Wonderful Life is ranked 25th of all time on IMDb, and Miracle on 34th Street isn't in the top 250...
