EARLY ACCESS: UHF

Hi Yes Hello!  I'm still working on the details of this video - we got back in late last night so thank you for your patience, your understanding, your kind messages, and thoughts & prayers during this time of loss and grieving.

EARLY ACCESS: UHF

Comments

Oh shit. Did you know there's a Dolly Parton movie about her working at a radio station? It's called Straight Talk, and it's real cute.

Midge

We should put together a playlist of 5-6 "Weird" Al videos (along with their originals) for Ashley to watch and get caught up on that non-movie pop culture.

John Rybock

The original "Lump" song lyrics and video are just as funny as Weird Al's "Gump" takeoff IMO

Paul Johnson

Fun fact: Fran Drescher was just elected as President of the Screen Actors Guild.

Alexander Fish

As I said on the watch-along: As an Asian-American guy, I gotta be honest -- I have no idea if that "supplies" joke is actually meant to be an accent joke or literally just a "surprise" pun. The guy who plays Kuni was also in Sixteen Candles, and his material in that movie is so much worse than "supplies" even if is a mildly racist joke (if it is, it's the only one of those in the movie -- he's doing a cartoonish voice but not the bad "Asian caricature" voice or broken English that is the hallmark of so many other '80s comedies with Asian characters).

Tyler Foster

I think Ashleigh's reactions to Weird Al videos would be great.

Mark Sylvester

The NY state fair actually had a thing called "the heart failure" and it was a hot dog wrapped in bacon in a Twinkie with a peanut butter glaze

Elisa H.

I always got a laugh from the line from "Yoda': "I know Darth Vader's really got you annoyed but if you kill him then you'll be unemployed" :)

Paul Johnson

Weird Al has guest "riffed" with the Rifftrax crew(MST3K alumni Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy) a few times....I caught a number of their live simulcasts(which were actually performed at the Belcourt Theater in Nashville) thru Fathom Events at my local multiplex before it closed due to covid...but it was always a great time they have started doing the live shows again I just have to find a new theater to see them I guess

Paul Johnson

I always wanted to send Al my idea for a song based on "Roxanne" by The Police. I could only come up with a single line though. "Rudolph, you don't have to put on your red nose."

Thomas Ivie

And also had a successful run as a Marvel Comics property in the 70s and early 80s

Paul Johnson

Strange thing about this is I considered myself a Weird Al fan but I still have never seen this movie. I had no interest when it originally came out. But it looks like a fun time. May have to check out the full thing sometime.

Joshua Yeager

It's such a good joke, I'm pretty progressive, but holy shit it's just too good

ingibingi2000

Just going by memory it's been awhile...sorry about that! :)

Paul Johnson

He is probably best known for starring in the original 1956 "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" ....he also made a memorable cameo in the 1978 remake which I sent Ashleigh a while back

Paul Johnson

Many thanks for sharing this film with us. Kevin McCarthy played RJ Fletcher in this film. If you liked his specific flavor of comedic villainy, I'd suggest the movie INNERSPACE (1987) to you. No spoilers but it's a great comedy flick with action and sci-fi elements. Starring McCarthy, Martin Short, Meg Ryan and the less bat-crap nutso Quaid brother, I think you'd enjoy it.

T.J. Gengler

There was an entire album in between the one with "My Bologna" and the one with "Yoda"! ;)

Tyler Foster

FYI: Weird Al's last name is pronounced with a K sound, not an H sound, so, more like it's spelled.

Tyler Foster

Since you liked Mary Stuart Masterson so much in "Fried Green Tomatoes" I highly recommend her movie "Benny and Joon"...one of my personal favorites.

Frankophile

When she watched Forrest Gump I linked The Presidents of the United States of America's "Lump" and Weird Al's "Gump" in the comments.

Tyler Foster

Coincidentally, Al's first choice for the role of Philo was Joel Hodgson, creator of "Mystery Science Theater 3000."

Tyler Foster

I’m glad it’s something silly. It helps at times like these.

Jason Nunez

And I think the next one was "Yoda" to the tune of "Lola" by the Kinks

Paul Johnson

Anyone who has seen Mystery Science Theater The Movie remembers them fondly "Like who doesn't have an interocitor?" :)

Paul Johnson

Do you think the badges line in Blazing Saddles wasn't a reference to The Treasure of Sierra Madre?

Opti_Frog

Yes. And the percussion was done on his accordion case. Next hit after that was My Balogna a parody of My Sharona.

Bill Bevins

PBS varies from place to place. For instance, where I live there are two sister affiliates, with unique programming, both owned by the Milwaukee Area Technical College. One was channel 10, the other was channel 36.

Paul Krueger

I'm so sorry. :-( Please stay strong in this time. And take all the time you need for it.

Matt Blanchette

I'm looking forward to Titanic!

Michael Waldrep

Missed References: Mr. Ed was an early 60's sitcom about a guy and his talking horse named Mr. Ed. "Badgers? We don't need no stinking Badgers!" is a reference to a famous line originally from the movie The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The original line is "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!" and it's widely quoted. Weird Al all buff with the bandana shooting things up with his shirt off is a reference to Rambo, First Blood Parts II & III. The very last scene with Weird Al and his girlfriend is a parody of Rhett and Scarlett in Gone With The Wind. Conan the Librarian is a parody of Conan the Barbarian, an Arnold movie from the early 80s.

Michael Waldrep

"Titanic" is one of those movies where the first half is "A Chick Flick" and the second half is "A Guy Flick"... And it may have cost $200 Million to make but it's made $2-plus Billion, so it was worth every Penny...

James Falato

When Stanley Spadowski was putting whip cream into the old guy's mouth in the audience, that old guy is Dr Demento. Weird Al used to send parody songs to Dr Demento who had a novelty song radio show. People requested more songs from AL and thus he became famous via Dr Demento. I believe Al's first big hit was "Another One Rides the Bus", a parody of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust". He recorded it in the bathroom at his college radio station for the acoustics.

Thomas Ivie

I learned all the words to Bohemian Rhapsody from Weird Al's Bohemian Polka version.

Thomas Ivie

My family still quotes all the Spatula City lines!

Jill Peterson

I graduated from high school the year this came out. Such silly fun.

Jill Peterson

Thanks I feel like an Idiot!! Maybe I should be on Comment Probation.

Andy Hafler

This was fun. Your reaction when mean dude said something about broadcasting in a closet was priceless.

Lynnetta

Yes to Wayne's World! Excellent!

Lynnetta

I like the idea of Weird Al music reactions! He has some really great stuff. I have a soft spot for some of his polkas :)

Lynnetta

Oops! It's Clark Gable in Gone With The Wind. : )

Maria Yarber

Before cable TV stations would broadcast in VHF and UHF. VHF were the regular channels 2-13. You needed a special antenna to access UHF and it's channels were 14-99. There would be independent stations that would show old movies and TV shows on it but the most successful UHF channel was PBS which is channel 28. If you want to watch movie about a small, independent TV show in public access television the you really need to watch Wayne's World.

Bill Bevins

Ashleigh, you should do some Weird Al music reactions on your other channel. Some of the references you missed were Mr. Ed, which is an old TV show about a talking horse. In CA we had a car dealer named Cal Worthington who used to do commercials with an exotic animal and say it was his dog Spot. Conan the Barbarian was a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. We don't need no stinking badges is a reference to a Humphrey Bogart movie called Treasure of the Sierra Madre. When he was hit in the face that was a reference to Geraldo Rivera getting a chair thrown in his face when he had White Supremists on his show and he broke his nose when a fight started. Shirtless guy with a gun was a parody of Rambo with Sylvester Stallone. My favorite part of your reaction was when they said "broadcasting in a closet" and you stopped and looked around.

Bill Bevins

UHF = ultra high frequency. Before cable, television signals were broadcasted through the air on ultra high frequency radio waves. “Interocitor” is a reference to the great 1950s science fiction film This Island Earth - an interocitor was an advanced alien TV which aliens used to communicate across light years.

Gordon Davis

We'd all be open to more Weird Al in movie form, he just hasn't done one. Also: The music video you showed was Al's spoof of Dire Strait's "Money For Nothing" titled "Beverly Hillbillies", and the spoof is of the song /and/ the video.

Amstrad

Plus the badges line was in Blazing Saddles.

Thomas Ivie

Gone With the Wind, Conan the Barbarian and First Blood should be on your next member pick poll... congratulations on getting the chance to pick up this review! Really happy that you enjoyed it!

Ullatec

This movie is a cult classic. It's still very popular here in Tulsa where it was filmed. I was in college and working as a pizza delivery man when this was being filmed. Made a few deliveries to a few of the different filming locations and met "Weird" Al a few of those times. He was super cool and a very nice guy.

Billy Hogner

My! Where did you get that wonderful spatula?

Thomas Ivie

So sorry for your loss, Ashley. Thank you for going forward with these movies. UHF is a favorite of mine.

Kristopher Wood

Is tuna with bbq sauce good? Or just weirdly tolerable?

ChickensAreRacist

Be well, Ashleigh!

Sarah

SUPPLIES!! 🤣
