EARLY ACCESS: It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World!

Comments

She never should’ve watched the longer version. And I wouldn’t call the movie funny, so much as fun. I was 10 when I first saw it 44 years ago. Loved it then. Love it now.

Thomas Monk

I second Mask

Lauren D Martin

I hope your finger heals quickly

Lauren D Martin

It was just the madness topic that got it nominated. The title of the movie is bit deceitful because they aren't so much mad in this movie as greedy. A bunch of people out for themselves. A better comedy for the madness category would be Crazy People with Dudley Moore. Stir crazy is on her list but it's more about a prison rodeo than madness.

Wesley Eskildsen

I'd like to see a reaction to "Kentucky Fried Movie" the 1st movie from the Zucker bros./Jim Abrahams(the creative guys behind "Airplane" and subsequent films)

Paul Johnson

No such insult was ever put to film and I'd wager Shatner's toupee on that.

T.J. Gengler

And this time, let's show some creativity: Rather than saying afterwards "Now you have to watch Top Secret/Naked Gun!", how about a little love from the people who remembered that an "Airplane II: the Sequel" actually existed?

Eric Janssen

I have wondered how this holds up. For people who weren't around then. Not everything does and I'm not very good at predicting.

Kristen North

I'm pretty sure she said Airplane is in April.

Kristen North

When I saw they had requested this movie I was like what? The only reason to watch this is for nostalgia, but even that wears thin. However I cant wait for the ones coming up.

I'm probably the only one who remembers 1986's "Million Dollar Mystery", where the IAM4W-clone money-chase of forgotten 80's comics was only a TIE-IN to a sweepstakes giveaway promotion. (They didn't even reach the equivalent Big W, viewers had to guess where it was for the contest.) All I remember was that the characters were a lot more likable than these ones.

Eric Janssen

It's a long haul... I'm not the hugest fan, to be honest. We need to get a reaction to Airplane! on this channel...

I feel like everyone who voted for movies that were not Mad World are justified.

Neil Brass

Yes, this movie is way too long. It just goes on and on. Rat race is less believable as far as concept goes and much of the comedy is just goofy but I still say it's better than mad world.

Matt Dellarosa

You are a trooper! I know Buddy Hackett has already been mentioned but I can't miss a chance to use one of my favorite random movie quotes. The familiar voice - "Ariel! How you doing, kid!? Woah, what a swim."

Lynnetta

And your pinkie looks angry, girl. Ouch!

Terri Vineyard

Oh, you were so disgruntled! That's how I felt watching "Forrest Gump." Just begging for it stop.

Terri Vineyard

There is a more modern version of this movie that you might like although many hated it. Rat Race has a similar them of a bunch of people racing across the southwest to get a bunch of money. Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Lovitz, Cuba Gooding, Kathy Najimi, John Cleese, and Rowan Atkinson among others. Again mostly slapstick humor,

Wesley Eskildsen

It wasn't on your madness list, but there is a movie starring Dudley Moore and Daryll Hannah called 'Crazy people' that you should consider watching sometime.

Wesley Eskildsen

I'm sorry you didn't like it. I have liked it since I was a kid but in retrospect it was probably because I first saw it as a kid and Jonathan Winters destroying a gas station the way he did is hilarious to an 8yr old.

Wesley Eskildsen

Has anyone suggested 9 to 5? The Dolly Parton reaction alone would be awesome but it also contain the March madness. Considering the whole kidnapping their boss thing even though he is a dick

LOL, this was only funny because people knew who the comedians were. To someone not familiar with the people most likely wouldn't care about it. I enjoyed it when i was younger. 2.5 stars is a fair review (higher than I expected).

Oouga

And the male goofy-dancer is Dick Shawn, who eventually went on to the original 1967 Mel Brooks "The Producers". Now THAT'S a comedy.

Eric Janssen

The Money Pit is an "improvement" on IAM4W?? Well, it's shorter, anyway.

Eric Janssen

Again, if “Look, it’s THAT guy in one scene, he’s famous!” for three hours + is all it takes to make some folks happy, try the 1956 David Niven “Around the World in 80 Days”: Which also piled as many widescreen spot-the-stars into three hours of Jules Verne’s round-the-world adventure, but with more scenery, gratuitous location-travelogue, adventure, comedy, and no despicable people screaming at each other or mugging it up in front of rear-projection. (They didn’t have “green screen” back then.)

Eric Janssen

Okay, this movie is great and that pinkie is definitely broken...

Manuel Johnen

I don't really care much for this movie either. Practically none of its principal players really had any background in physical comedy, although they were all extremely talented in their own right. But I hope that you don't dismiss old comedies/films altogether. I recommend CITY LIGHTS from 1931 starring Charlie Chaplin. It's my favorite movie of all time. A beautiful story about a blind flower-seller and the lonely tramp who falls in love with her. ("Tramp" was also a slang expression for a hobo.) It's an excellent introduction to silent films and the classic slapstick comedy that IAMMMW attempts to pay homage to. Chaplin wasn't in MAD WORLD, he had been barred from the U.S. during the "Red Scare" of the early 1950's and was living in exile in Switzerland. And he wouldn't have wanted anything to do Kramer's movie in the first place. Chaplin starred, wrote, produced, directed, edited, composed the music for and even financed almost all of his features. He was a pioneer and a literal genius in the art of motion pictures who remains in a category all his own. Or try Buster Keaton's THE GENERAL (1927) or STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. (1928). Keaton has a cameo in IAMMMW , but he should be appreciated in his prime. Keaton was an amazing original and an irreplaceable genius. One more thing that these films have going for them? None of them remotely approach a 3 1/2 hour running time, the longest only runs a tight 1hr 27min.

Ben Everett

Oh man! The Elephant Man (1980) 😭. And also Mask (1985) 😭

C. A.

High Anxiety.......for "real comedy", Frailty.....since you like suspense, and The Elephant Man.....for a tear jerker. These are all great choices for March Madness!!

Candace Anderson

Watching it just once is a nod of respect to all of those classic stars from yesteryear. Thanks for being such a trooper. 🎬🎞🎟

Shreakin Warrior

Mother introduced me to this film RIP Susan Brown , I love you

eric brown

Having seen both movies, I couldn't vote for either. There are SO many GREAT movies and no time to waste on clinkers.

Paul Kay

Ashleigh,

Paul Kay

For the record, I'm not related to Charles or Tim McGraw. I AM distantly related to Wild Bill Hickock but that never comes up.

TheNeonRabbit

Stanley Kramer made this movie. He was known for his deep, serious, socially-conscious dramas. A brilliant filmmaker but he did NOT have a sense of humor. The real attraction here is the stars. Nearly every single person appearing in this movie was a familiar TV or movie star of the day, even background people with no lines. If you don't know the actors, though--and there's no reason you would-- the film itself becomes just an overlong, unfunny study in greed and excess.

Steven

I have been waiting for this!!!!! I knew what your reaction would be to this film. Without knowing who 95% of the people are in it this film can feel like it takes forever!

1000thghost

Out of all the people in this movie, the only one still alive is the girl with goofy dance.

Steven

I didnt hate this movie, but I would never recommend it. The only thing that makes it ok to watch is all the famous people in one movie. Since you dont really know any of the people you didnt even have that going for you. I think I would of went with As Good as it gets as a "Mad" movie.

Tim Gilbert

Don't blame you for not liking this. It's far too long. If you want something really epic and still enjoyable, you might enjoy Ben Hur. It's a full drama and a bit religious at the end, but it was EPIC. There's a reason people say something was "bigger than Ben Hur".

Nessa Arandur

But I am looking forward to Big Trouble in Little China. Lots of campy fun. A definate cult classic.

Todd Bradford

Don't blame me. All I can do is vote on the movies you put in a poll. If asked straight up for a recommendation for a comedy I doubt I would ever get all the way down to It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World. For comedies I would recommend The Money Pit, Sixteen Candles, Coming to America, Splash, Ace Ventura Pet Detective, The Sure Thing, Trading Places, Let it Ride, Weird Science, Real Genius, Better Off Dead, and I could keep on going.

Todd Bradford

Yeah, the extended version is basically just a curiosity for fans of the movie, which is why the quality of the additional footage is in such rough shape. I definitely would not have recommended the longer cut in this case, and in general, the longer cut is not always the right one! I watched the Live where you talked about movies coming up and I don't remember any others where this would be an issue.

Tyler Foster

I really appreciate that even when you're CLEARLY getting irritated by the movie you still have moments when you laugh out loud, spread a little love on the dresses, or empathize with Jonathon Winters. Watching your reactions is always just so much fun (even when I disagree; I love this flick). Hopefully Big Trouble and Stir Crazy will be more enjoyable for ya!

Snow Goon

I just skimmed through the first live opening and saw you open it. I guess I did miss it.

Mark Sylvester

I’ve never heard you sing before. Damn momma you got some pipes!

cainnum

I saw this movie a couple of years ago and I had a similar reaction. I was sad by what the money turned those people into! They were not likeable. I mean, the police chief was going to go to Mexico and leave his wife and kids! I think you you will like Big Trouble In Little China - fun movie!

Michael Waldrep

I’m gonna say I did not vote for this movie! Dream team is sooooooo much better!

Vicky phillips

Don Knotts!!

Amy Silknitter

Thurston Howell III (the Millionaire) from Gilligan's Island. Yup.

Amy Silknitter

hi. there is way better 60s movies than this one. I think in my opinion. I agree with you. not to pick on anyone but maybe someone could have explained the long intro music. this is called an overture. sometimes 50s and 60s movies did this where they have a long piece of intro music to open the film. West Side Story, Cleopatra, are films that had this. I didn't think you were going to like this movie. LOL

stephen phillips

I wonder if she would like "The Three Stooges Go Around The World in a Daze" from 1963? Or maybe she needs to see the original shorts with Curly or Shemp first.

Thomas Ivie

FWIW, your pinkie did look swollen when you first held it up. If it still hurts, you can "splint" it by taping it to the next finger.

Kathy Ice

Ashleigh I noticed you kinda perked up when the 3 Stooges appeared....have you ever seen any of their work?

Paul Johnson

This is why I’m hesitant when everyone keeps telling her to watch Robin Hood Men In Tights. It was only funny because of how it made fun of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, and that movie didn’t stand the test of time, anyway. Not many people younger than 40 have seen the source material, so the jokes would fall flat. Spaceballs is still funny, because Star Wars is STILL a pop culture powerhouse. A common reference for most people.

Heather Qualy

Wasn't my pick. A lot of these actors are funny in their stand alone movies. This ensemble should've worked...... in theory. Another case of thinking all of the great actors could save a bad movie.

sparkles

I'm so sorry you didn't enjoy this. You might have more if you knew who these actors are and their contributions to film and TV. Also movies were longer back in the day. I think you'll have a lot of fun with Big Trouble in Little China though. Stupid fun!

Mo Vetta

After seeing this you need to watch some older films so you can appreciate all the amazing actors in this film.

Mo Vetta

“Why did y’all tell me to watch this movie?!” 🤦‍♀️ Guuuurrrrllll, I love you because you are one of those reactors who reads the comments that are left. We DIDN’T! Did you not see that for every person who said how good it was, you had three of us saying, “No! Don’t do it! You will NOT like this movie. Long, slow, not many jokes, you won’t know a single actor in it. Don’t watch this!!”?😝

Heather Qualy

Rat race was a great homage to this film and, yes, much much shorter.

PickettsChargingPort

Aww. Sorry she didn't like it. What I appreciate, though, is she told us she didn't like it.

PickettsChargingPort

That’s an excellent question. I’ve been wanting to see a watch along of certain movies from Hallobeans for the longest time too, but you never know. She didn’t have the entire software that she has now to have done a full watch along, but maybe.

Gio Vidrio

Ashleigh I wasn't sure where to post this. Would it be possible for you to post watch alongs of movies you did before your patreon? I was thinking of some Jingle Beans and Hallobeans movies. I would really like to see a watch along of Die Hard, The Exorcist and others. Not sure if you would or could do that but thought I would ask.

Mark Sylvester

Totally agree with you. It's a fun movie for people of a certain age because every actor, whether they were a major character or not, was a MAJOR star at the time the movie was made. Which was a first when the movie was released. The remake, Rat Race, was a much funnier and SHORTER and starred Whoopie Goldberg.

Dennis Canright

Yeah the singing voice took me by surprise.

Kenton Kruger

I think she would like Cannon ball Run more. The humor is “edgier” let’s say.

C. A.

You definitely picked the version that’s too long. What you watched wasn’t even “the movie” but the extended work print edition that was edited recently for a DVD release. The theatrical cut, while still long at 2 1/2 hours, its paced better. Though I can understand the slow pace being frustrating even though I like the movie. I’d recommend catching Rat Race at some point which has a similar story but is faster paced

Robert T. Nickerson

One way of looking at it is that 20 years from now, there will still be people who fondly remember the "Scary Movie" series. But the movies are almost entirely dependent on familiarity with very specific pop culture elements that have not persisted. Some pop culture lasts nigh forever, but most of it dies out as quickly as it appeared. When you have no familiarity with the actors, what made them famous or why, just seeing them on screen making a certain face or acting a certain way that was generally considered to be funny back then, in that context... it just isn't going to work for you now. On the other hand, there are forms of humor that last forever, without being dependent on any specific cultural state or knowledge of events. The funny (sorry) thing here is that I'll bet that you could pick a number of these actors/performers, and present the works they were best known for that based their humor on more solid ground (the human condition, inherent absurdity, etc) and Ashleigh would find them much more enjoyable than this movie that shoved them all together and declared "This is funny because these people were funny."

Thomas Yanez

Ashleigh, if you get hate for this it’s only because you watched the extended cut. I personally loved that you got to react to it, and I agree this movie is not for everyone. There will be a bunch of butthurt patrons though who WISHED you loved it and gave it high praise, but realistically speaking I knew you’d rate it low. You didn’t have to come for ET like that though. Lmao! Anyways, you’re not losing me as a friend over this review. Keep on paving the trail with your future, it’s looking bright. Side note: those vocals of yours! Killing it.

Gio Vidrio

This is why I hesitate to upvote those that keep requesting Cannonball Run, a movie I very much enjoy. I think, in a very similar vein to this movie, it's a film of its time. Without having been a part of pop culture in the eras these movies (ensemble comedies) were made make them far less enjoyable. It's not just the familiarity with the actors, these movies also need the awareness of the greater zeitgeist of when they were made.

Kenton Kruger

You were right that was Mister Howell from Gilligan's Island. Actor Jim Backus.

Mark Sylvester

I agree with your review Ashleigh. I have never been able make it through it which is why I didn't do the watch along. I usually do. I don't know if you will like Big Trouble in Little China but it is one of my favorites.

Mark Sylvester

Love the Camp Crystal Lake Shirt Ashleigh! Did you get that from your first opening? If so I missed it.

Mark Sylvester

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF is a pretty good film but I would support just about any James Garner flick you might mention.

T.J. Gengler

As a Disney Princess fan, you probably recognized Buddy Hackett's voice as Scuttle the seagull in "The Little Mermaid". Another film from the same time period that is shorter and, in my opinion, much funnier is "Support Your Local Sheriff" starring James Garner.

Cristina Collins-Armstrong

The soda is not old, it's "old fashioned". They are bottled today.

Jill Peterson

Bullet Bras were the worst!

Jill Peterson

I'm in that age bracket and I certainly didn't vote for it. I couldn't believe it even made the shortlist although I did feel that with having so many mads in the title and a March madness month, that people just thought there was something to it. So many of these stars had their own television shows at the time and it was the biggest collection of comedy stars ever put together. How could it not be funny? Easy. This was 1963 and so many of the people involved were at the peak of their careers or past it. Absolutely dumbfounded this movie ever got onto this channel. I'm sure Ashleigh had no idea and went along with her viewers in good faith. Cannot wait to read feedback from people who voted for this and why.

Marcus

YAY! This is a movie we watched as a family at a reunion when I was little. It was the first time any of us had seen a VCR, and we were super excited to watch a movie on a tape!! The whole fam-damnly was gathered around, oo-ing and ah-ing at the fact that we could pause the movie. We laughed at rewinding, and fast-forwarding. This movie is more of a nostalgic trip for me than just a movie. P.S. We also watched Blazing Saddles, and it was my first experience with Mel Brooks that fine day.

Jill Peterson

You casually sang a joke song with a great voice, bravo

Joseph Ricks

Great review once again. You might remember Buddy Hackett because he played the tv Scrooge in Scrooged

Mike Johnson

True fact...Dick Shawn died onstage doing standup and the audience initially thought it was a joke

Paul Johnson

Yes, that is a funny movie. Zero Mostel is great in that movie. I think Ashleigh would like The Producers which also had Mostel along with Gene Wilder.

Bill Bevins

You mentioned the movie Always. That was based on a movie called A Guy Named Joe which starred Spencer Tracy, the old guy in this movie. Jim Backus was Thurston Howell III on Gilligan's Island. He was also the voice of Mr Magoo, a popular cartoon character in the 60s. Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol would be great for Jingle Beans. The truck driver was played by Jonathon Winters, one of the funniest men in TV history. He had his own variety show in the 60s and was Mork's son in the TV show Mork and Mindy. There were a lot of big name stars here but too many to go into.

Bill Bevins

Thank you for powering your way through the entire film and finishing it even though you didn't like it. It's my all-time favorite comedy and my wife refuses to watch it with me. So the fact you made it through proves something. I don't know what. But something!

Thomas Ivie

The guy in the second convertible (who is told the spies are after him) was Don Knott's, AKA Barney Fife from Andy Griffith Show, the loon that runs over Spencer Tracy's hat was Jerry Lewis of Labor Day MDA Telethon fame. The hungover pilot was Jim Bakkus (Mr. Howell of Gilligan's Island), the great Ethyl Merman was mother in law

Fred Zeppelin

I think the main reason this was so popular back then was because all of the actors were such huge celebrities back then. I do miss Dick Shawn though. He was hilarious in the movie “The Producers” with baby Gene Wilder.

Ian Jones

Don't feel bad for not liking a movie that's requested. With this movie you have to take into account the time period it came out in. This was before Monte Python. This type of movie is called a farce and this was popular because no one had ever done a movie with this many stars in it. I think the reason this won the poll is because you have a lot of older people like myself who saw it in the 60s and remember it being very funny and felt a bit of nostalgia when they saw it on the poll. It was considered one of the funniest movies ever made at the time it released. Should have done the theatrical release because over 3 hours is too long for this type of movie.

Bill Bevins

Love your review, never seen why people like it. I'm a big film fan, this one is just not good.

Michael Johnson

I think all those actors, or most of them, are dead now. Most of them were well known comedians or comedic actors, so I enjoyed seeing them again. 3 hours is a LOOOOOONG time to watch slapstick humor, so I agree with you there. And comedy movies in the 60's had a different view of humor than now. Let me recommend "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum" from 1966. It's only an hour and a half.

Mark Lee

".... started in a new universe. " Please, oh PLEASE let it be BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE. 2 out of 5 stars, that's about where I'd rank it and I voted for it. That shows what I think of STIR CRAZY.

T.J. Gengler

I had no plans to watch the full version. My only question is if she ever figured that out.

Kenton Kruger

Y’all I cannot tell you how excited my parents and I are to watch this!!!

melissa goff

You recognize the one guy's voice (Buddy Hacket) probably from the Little Mermaid. He was Scuttle the seagull.

Adolfo Acosta

It's been over 40 years since I watched this. I have it recorded to my DVR. Will do the watch along tonight. This is two movies in a row I can do the watch along.
