Comments

Awakenings, The Elephant Man, Frailty(Highly Underrated), and High Anxiety.........All great for March Madness!!!!

Candace Anderson

I have a friend that sends them to me!

Ashleigh Burton

I am definitely open to any type of movie! :D

Ashleigh Burton

I got your letter!! I haven't opened it yet- but I saw your name! :)

Ashleigh Burton

If you want good Jack Nicholson, Batman, A few good men, The Witcher’s of Eastwick

Brett Delbridge

I'm all about M*A*S*H.

Melissa

You know what’s a great movie that takes place in a similar setting? Awakenings. You would really really like that movie.

Kate Cassidy

Classic sitcom--DeVito was his usual warm self as Louie, the dispatcher, and Lloyd was burned-out font of wisdom Reverend Jim. After that WandaVision crap, I’m sitting Millennials down and MAKING them watch classic 60’s and 70’s sitcoms. (Wonder if Ash's seen Beverly Hillbillies?) ;)

Eric Janssen

I would argue that you can't steal the show when you're the star of the show.

Edward Olson

Why are you spoiling so much about the plots of these movies? Just recommend the titles.

Edward Olson

For those trying to remember Louise Fletcher from something, she became SO culturally typecast from her Nurse Ratched Oscar, she basically brought back the role, cold patronizing smile and all, as the power-hungry theo-fascist cleric Kai Winn on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".

Eric Janssen

I would like to suggest three other titles which also share similar themes regarding mental health if I may: THE DREAM TEAM(1989): One that has already been mentioned in this thread a few times already. It stars Michael Keaton, a writer and pathological liar with anger management issues. Christopher Lloyd, a husband and father with OCD, constantly fixated on cleanliness and order. Peter Boyle (the monster from YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN), a former advertising executive who believes he is Jesus Christ. And Stephen Furst (Flounder from ANIMAL HOUSE), a borderline catatonic man-child who primarily communicates using baseball terminology. During a field trip to a baseball game in New York City, their doctor vanishes, leaving the four psychiatric inpatients stranded. Now they must overcome their mutual hostility and work together to find out what happened and get their doctor back before the authorities catch up to them. Also featuring Lorraine Bracco (Karen Hill from GOODFELLAS). BEING THERE (1979): Stars Peter Sellers (DR. STRANGELOVE) as simple-minded man called Chance, the gardener who lives in the townhouse of a wealthy old man in Washington, D.C. The gardener has no past, has never left the property and has spent his entire life just tending to the plants. Outside of the garden, his only other source of knowledge, leisure and experience comes entirely from what he sees on television. Which he watches constantly. Forced to leave after his benefactor dies, Chance enters the real world for the first time. Very soon he inadvertently becomes an unlikely trusted advisor to an ailing powerful businessman/tycoon, who is also a close confidant to the President of the United States, and the tycoon’s younger wife played by Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser Boudreaux from STEEL MAGNOLIAS). In the process, Chance (now mistakenly called Chauncey Gardner) unknowingly becomes a Washington insider, respected political expert, national celebrity and even a sex symbol. THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS (1971) George C. Scott (Gen. 'Buck' Turgidson from DR. STRANGELOVE) plays a former judge who, after suffering a serious breakdown following the death of his wife, believes himself to be Sherlock Holmes and is in constant pursuit of the unseen but all-powerful Professor Moriarty. When his crooked brother attempts to have him institutionalized in an attempt to gain control of his estate, his case attracts the attention of a certain resident psychiatrist. "Holmes" is initially dismissive of the specialist, until he discovers that her name is... Dr. Watson, played by Joanne Woodward. Co-stars Al Lewis ("Grandpa" from THE MUNSTER'S TV series, James Tolkan (Mr. Strickland from the BACK TO THE FUTURE films) and Rue McClanahan ("Blanche" from TV's THE GOLDEN GIRLS). All of these films are very good, and even if they aren't a good fit for your channel, they still come highly recommended. I always enjoy your reviews, keep up the great work! P.S. Jack's great at crazy, but is on of the finest actors to have ever been onscreen. He has a terrific range and should be known for more than just a handful of roles. There are far too many to list but here are a few. FIVE EASY PIECES (1970), THE LAST DETAIL (1973), CHINATOWN (1974), THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (1981), or PRIZZI'S HONOR (1985). He's also a very talented writer/director as well.

Ben Everett

BTLC basically flopped in theaters, and if it leaves Ash puzzled, she's not alone: I remember being in that first weekend theater audience who walked in thinking "Yeah, Carpenter kung-fu parody, baybee!" and walked out thinking "Uh...What did I just WATCH, and WTH was up with Kurt's John Wayne voice??" Not a "stupid" movie, but a very, very personally confused one, and yes, certainly the product of a director and actor who didn't care what they were making.

Eric Janssen

...and stupid ways.

Manuel Johnen

It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World is one of the funniest movies ever made. That said, if you are looking for movies about crazy, then watch The Dream Team. Good review. This movie made Jack’s career. Billy was played by Brad Dourif (sp) one of the best character actors around.

Edward Landis

Have you seen Sucker Punch? It's more recent, but deals with very big themes in very weird ways.

Nessa Arandur

I have suggested it more than a few times :)

Mo Vetta

Thomas, I was about to say! It’s been getting wild & dramatic on these comment sections (believe me I’ve been in some 🤦🏽‍♂️).

Gio Vidrio

Underappreciated film.

Kenton Kruger

Great in Exorcist 3 as well.

Kenton Kruger

One of my favorite "Oh that guy!" actors.

Kenton Kruger

Thanks for doing this Ashleigh. Like it or not, it is a movie that people need to see at least once in their lives.

I love Big Trouble in Little China! To me it is a perfect example of an 80's movie. A perfect mix of Action, Horror, Comedy, Science fiction and Martial Art fighting. I wouldn't call it stupid either but will agree that it might not be for everyone!😎

Mark Sylvester

If you are a fan of Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd - they were in a TV show together called Taxi. It was a really, really good show about a (you guessed it) taxi service.

Melissa

I saw Cuckoo's Nest in college as part of a class called Literature and Film. We read books then watched the movie versions and discussed the adaptations. I'm debating between watching the edited reaction or doing the watch along since it's been about 20 years. I remember liking the movie.

Lynnetta

Even younger the original The Little Shop of Horrors-1960.

Mark Sylvester

"Big Trouble in Little China" might be silly, but I wouldn't call it stupid. But, I would call it creative, unique and a bit subversive when it comes to cliche character roles. Great thing about John Carpenter, especially when working with Kurt Russell... neither one of them really cares about traditional expectations for making movies.

Thomas Yanez

I'm pretty sure Be Kind was pretending to quote Ashleigh in the first paragraph, not stating those things for him/herself.

Thomas Yanez

Big Trouble in Little China...make sure you aren't spending any money on it. It's sooooo stupid.

Jill Peterson

I kept waiting for you to recognize Danny Devito during the movie line you did with Christopher Loyd, but it was worth the wait all the way until the credits. Heavy movie at times considering the subject matter, but I'm so glad you liked it.

Thomas Ivie

Absolutely a mercy killing! Ratched is one of the most evil characters EVER!

Jill Peterson

Idc what you do.

Be Kind

If you want to see a YOUNG Jack Nicholson watch The Raven

Eric

I offered you a friendly tip in another post, and you responded, “I wasn’t talking to you.” So don’t talk to me.

Be Kind

Great reaction...I've always loved this movie it simultaneously has both one of the saddest and happiest endings in film history....can't wait to do the watch along when I come home from work tonight

Paul Johnson

Dream Team is a hilarious movie. Also has Stephen Furst who was Flounder in Animal House.

Bill Bevins

I have plans for the channel, but I’m not going to tell you about them in this video nor the next one nor the five after that. I have a surprise video coming next week, but I’m not going to tell you what it is in this video nor the next. So many teases ... If I were a guy, I’d be blue.

Be Kind

I second this. Great movie.

Christine

Some ppl in the poll did not want you to do Cuckoo’s Nest bc of the heavy subj matter (the harm inflicted on institutionalized patients). They thought it would be a rough watch. It seems they needn’t have worried.

Be Kind

You really should watch “As Good as it Gets”. It’s not as well-known as some, but it is a better movie than the other 3 you mentioned. It is a comedy-drama about mental health, starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt.

Wally Hartshorn

Another Christopher Lloyd film that fits the theme of the month is The Dream Team. The film also stars Michael Keaton and Peter Boyle (the creature from Young Frankenstein) as a small group of patients from a sanitarium who escape into the city for a day. It is a comedy but it was pretty funny.

Cristina Collins-Armstrong

“You did that. You did that, McMurphy. You did that to him.” Uhm, that TV show must be something if it obscures one of the most villainess film characters in movie history.

Be Kind

Glad you liked Cuckoo's Nest! Ooh, I think you'll like Big Trouble In Little China, a very fun action comedy movie with Kurt Russell!

Michael Waldrep

YES!!!!!! John Carpenter's and KURT RUSSELL IN BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA!!!! AWESOME ASHLEIGH!!!!!! OR JUST DO A JOHN CARPETER-ATHON WITH THE MOVIES ....THE FOG...,ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK,....STAR MAN....,THEY LIVE,AND CHRISTINE.!!!! VERY COOL!!!!!

WEEZER MANN

"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. " I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out. The Chief knew that as a free spirit McMurphy wouldn't want to live in that condition. Ruthless People is a great movie but isn't about craziness. Two other movies that would fit is Crazy People and The Dream Team. The Dream Team also stars Christopher Lloyd. Another movie with Nicholson, Lloyd and DeVito is Going South.

Bill Bevins

Great tease at the end, I can’t wait to see Big Trouble in Little China.

Gio Vidrio

Louise Fletcher was also in one of my favorite films, "Brainstorm" with Christopher Walken.

Mo Vetta

Louise Fletcher won an Oscar for her role. She's an incredible actress.

Mo Vetta

It's sort of refreshing to see 'real' movies reviewed once in a while rather than just cheesy 80s/90s comedies all the time(which I love btw). I wish more of her $100 tier patrons would pick more classic films to expand her film knowledge. Her review of Exorcist was great, so I think she can make great reviews out of any type of film.

Birdie Num Num

Michael Douglas won an Oscar for producing this(it won Best Picture). So he was reunited in a way with Danny Devito for Romancing the Stone. I'm guessing a lot of people are losing their shit over Big Trouble in Little China being next!

Birdie Num Num

And yes Nicholson characters are always a bit off

ingibingi2000

Where do you get your movies that you don't see associated artwork with it

ingibingi2000

Nicholson is one of my all time favorite actors, always steals the show

ingibingi2000

Brad Dourif (Billy) got an Oscar nomination for this film. He has since gone on to play a slew of odd characters including Wormtongue in Lord of the Rings and is the voice of Chucky the killer doll.

Alexander Fish

Scatman Crothers got an axe to the chest in the Shining.

Alexander Fish

Really interested to see your reaction to this. So dark. Nothing about this film is fun. Doesn't make it a bad film but it's not a good time

Mark Finley

I just sent this to you from Amazon because of what I went through recently

Joseph Burt

Vincent Sciavelli in both Cuckoo's Nest and YES in Ghost.
