There's an amazing documentary called Standing in the Shadows of Motown that delved deep into who the Funk Brothers were and what they contributed to cooking pot that was Motown. I heard that Barney Ales *might* have had some connections to the 'mob' - I was listening to a podcast a while back that played one of the promotional records that Ales would send to radio stations, and it had a " you should play this if you know what's good for ya" kind of vibe to it LOL! Motown did what it had to do to break through barriers though lol...
