Episode #788: In the Line of Fire (W❤️M)

“Leary, to me, does not seem like a man of the people…” - Chris

On this month’s W❤️M, Listener Request Month brings us a conversation on one of the all-time great Ass Magnet Movies, Wolfgang Peterson’s In the Line of Fire! How fantastic is John Malkovich in this movie? Why did we need the romance angle, especially with the cheap ice cream of it all? How hilarious is all this bad photoshop of Eastwood in the JFK photos? And isn’t it great watching Clint play piano? PLUS: How hard does this movie biff its perfect ending?!

In the Line of Fire stars Clint Eastwood, John Malkovich, Rene Russo, Dylan McDermott, Gary Cole, Fred Thompson, Gregory Alan Williams, Clyde Kusatsu, Elsa Raven, Steve Hytner, Patrika Darby, and Tobin Bell as, for some reason, Mendoza; directed by Wolfgang Peterson.

We hope you are enjoying We ❤️ Movies! Thanks so much for being the kick-ass Patreon subscriber that you are. Your support keeps the lights on around the old clubhouse and keeps us on the air. We know you have a lot of options for podcast enjoyment and we're stoked you chose to spend some time with us!

Man, that little aside about Scott Eastwood was like the in between scenes on street fighter 2 😬

Dennis Stack

The viewer request month talk reminds me of how every year I Worry my will get disqualified for one reason or another. So next year please post a list of requested movies you said no to.

Mark D Myers

"Trouble with the Curve? Pigeon betting

James Bergquist

McDermott over Mulroney and Pullman over Paxton for me.

Brendan 'Timbzy' Timbs

"John Malkovich is slinging ropes at the president." What is this, my search history?!

DMAC

There was a TV show called LA to Vegas that Dylan McDermott was in. Dermot Mulroney stared in an episode that I thought was funny.

Dawn Elicia Billings

Regarding Clint Eastwood doing a voice, which Andrew asked: he does a pretty good impression of John Huston’s inflection throughout WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART, which is a great, albeit underseen, movie of his

Felipe Sobreiro

1:40 I'm means it's not the same as pissing on a grave but... back in high-school my buddy was so hungover and afraid to go home he spent several hours moaning, vomiting in a cemetery. Just laying there for hours with his head poking out his car.

As the gang are avid Seinfeld fans, I was a little surprised no one wanted to note the Kramer vs Plaza Cable bit draws largely from this movie. I was doing that Leo meme when I watched this years after Seinfeld.

Oh! That Guy.

Always loved this one. Still has one of the best teaser trailers I have ever seen.

Ed Harris

Given how much it was discussed, I'm calling it here - if this movie came out 5-10 years later, during the hey day of every movie getting its own bells & whistles website, this one would have an interactive version of Leary's murder board for people to explore.

Todd B

I honestly think that Cabin legitimately, genuinely, becoming more and more upset at Eric (and for EVERYONE?) that it is impossible to deny that he would NOT sleep with Clint Eastwood..... is just the funniest thing I will hear in my lifetime. Waytago again guys. Brilliant episode!

Chris MacLeod

Frank Drebin Vs Jason Bourne

Joseph Xavier

I’ve listened twice already, so good!! Andrew - amazing Malkovich!!! Steve, I also often think about that weird gun and I don’t even own A gun.

Jaime Lee Ezell

Duane Barry reference! Holy shit I just watched that two parter for the first time yesterday. Remarkable television!

Brandon Shrader

Was anyone else pulling for Cabin to introduce himself as Chris CabIn The Line of Fire?

Julien Schwab

Heard’s performance was so small I had to double check his IMDb and was shocked at his lack of cache after being Terrible Dad. Unfortunately seems his career never took off due to being a bit more Alex Cutter than Professor Riger in his personal life

RJ Cunningham

When I was younger I always thought enemy mine was a prequel or somehow connected to the last starfighter.

Jason

California was very much still a swing state back in 1992, when this filmed. Clinton was the first Dem since LBJ to win it in that year's election!

Z

Can’t wait for Andrew, Chris, and Steve’s new side show, “The Heard Herd.”

Brent Cowan

I have been saying for years that we need to allow average and weird looking character actors to have bit parts in these big films. Where are the next generation of Wallace Shawns, Zelda Rubensteins, Austin Pendletons and Peter MacNicols of the world when we need them the most?

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Enemy Mine is probably a WHM. It’s a bit of a weird movie that goes off the rails in the third act. I’d love to hear all your thoughts because it will go weird places I am sure

Dan sulin

Roger Corman. Famous wage thief. Told the Fantastic 4 actors it was a pilot and the show was more likely to get picked up if they gave up their salary to help pay for effects.

The Wheel

Preferred adaptation of the book The Day of the Jackal, this or The Jackal, Clint/Malcovich or Gere/Bruce? I think I like Jackal better, even though Line of Fire is undoubtedly a higher quality flick and I really enjoyed it over the weekend

Smaug

Neat scotch and Clint Eastwood on the big screen, that is a REAL dadfernoon

Tim O'Connor

"Alright, Frank's partner, if you're not a cop, tell me right now you're not a cop." *Ape partner making kissy noises* "Well, that's that." I'm over her bowled over laughing. XD I, for one, wholeheartedly welcome Ape-ril 2.0 this week!!

Busiris

Ugh this season of Love is Blind is SO BORING

Rod

Love Eric just really giving it to John Heard for no reason. Also, kudos to the guys for showing more restraint than I would have been able to in not constantly praising the ideas of Malkovich's character given... everything.

Derek Baxter

Watching the credits and waiting for Mahoney to pop up after Russo and it was was McDermett. I rolled my eyes but sure. When next popped up Gary Cole I was near apoplectic and literally said aloud “there better be an “And” in front of Mahoney’s name.” I didn’t think it would actually happen but next up popped that fucker Fred Thompson and I thought the 90s were a sane time, there is no way Thompson gets credited over Mahoney. I actually was about 80/20% he would NOT be the “And” at that point, vs my previous 90/10% (after Gary Cole’s credit) And then came the “And John Mahoney,” and in my excitement realized I am quite the loser, but oh what excitement it was *also Gary Cole getting the credit before Thompson is hilariously poor work on Thompson’s agents part, the same agent that landed Fred the autobiography title “Teaching the Pig to Dance”

RJ Cunningham

If I recall right, SNL did a skit with Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney where it was a game show where people had to tell which was which. Which was hilarious that they were in on the joke. This was maybe 12-13 years ago?

Lar

Andrew’s Malkovich is the best I’ve ever heard. 💯

Samuel McGuire

Gary Cole is fine but Gary Coleman would've been amazing!

Daryl Williams

Malkovich’s plastic assassin gun is what you might now call a Shinzo Abe Special

Aaron Dowler

I.C. Weiner

Dear WHM, I hope you guys will have a chance to discuss ‘DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN’.

Paul

For single serve, late 80s early 90s, wooden spoon ice cream, I’m from Hoodsie country. Were big in New England. That wooden spoon feels so 1950s Americana thinking back

RJ Cunningham

I love the movie in line of fire but I would love love love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love love love love to hear you guys review, if you haven’t already, Beverly Hills cop. Or did you? Let me know I wanna listen to it Unless it’s live, of course

Sharon P

When I was in high school a kid in my grade was scanning and printing $20 bills at home and the secret service showed up to question him, which is how I found out they investigate money crimes. I scanned one side of a $1 bill in our school's computer lab to use the image in a powerpoint project and my teacher came up behind me and clamped a hand on my shoulder and said "After everything that's happened here you're scanning MONEY?" I am 44 years old and my asshole is still fused shut

Chris Rose

Clint does a voice in WHITE HUNTER BLACK HEART as a John Huston surrogate. It goes as well as you think it would.

MarkNM

My Dad and I saw this in the theatre. He’d sneak booze in but wouldn’t mix it in coke or whatever. No mixed drinks for my old man. Order a small water, dump that out in the bathroom, pour the scotch into the empty cup.

Jason

Can’t believe my request got picked this year! This episode was fantastic.

James

Given the subject matter, you guys are models of restraint here. My tongue would have been cube steak after four minutes.

MarkNM

just watched this while working, about to check out the ep. tall glass of water in hand, coffee ... in the other hand! Love you guys. Erick, thanks so much for the recent hooker EP, this bluesuit needs them things like Hooker needs a hot-plated pizza!

Zora McBride

Can Clint Eastwood play the piano anymore? Of course he can Well he couldn't before!

Les Whinen

Ok when Andrew made those monkey kissing noises I legitimately laughed out loud

ediblegenius

Quick, everyone - rendezvous with Clint's ass!

Tim O'Connor

Fantastic 4? Yes, the OG

Jan

Best plastic gun ever
