Episode #786: Signs

“Who doesn’t want to live like the Donner party?” - Steve

On this week’s episode, WAIT-WHUT-uary comes to a close with a convo on a film by the MACK DADDY of WAIT-WHUT endings, M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs! How amazing are all the performances in this movie? Kids included! Is this one of Night’s best-shot films, what with the incredible cinematography by the legendary Tak Fujimoto? How hilarious is that Michael Showalter appearance? And who didn’t mess themselves with that Brazilian birthday party video? PLUS: Beware the offering of “heavy” water…

Signs stars Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Abigail Breslin, Rory Culkin, Cherry Jones, Merritt Weaver, and M. Night Shyamalan as Ray Reddy; directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

No Trap episode in January. Ok. Wait what-uary. Here we go. Another chance. Oh look, a Shyamalan film. Here we go…time to press play and… Signs?? What the fuck… Seriously? I don’t give a fuck about Signs. I’m not going to watch it and support Mel Gibson and M Knight Shyamalan.

Cabin actually took trailers from the Bad Boys 1 and 2 VHS tapes instead. So the answer is: he went rogue.

Emil Svensson

Yeah I saw them on YouTube but I prefer listening as part of the episode. It's a nice lead in. I didn't listen to bad boys (how does that have VHS trailers?) and in saving primal fear for after my partner sees it. Guess I've just not listened to the two episodes it happened.

Jeffrey Giorgi

There was one in the Primal Fear episode, and before then Bad Boys: Ride or Die. They're all in a playlist on the WHM YouTube channel.

Emil Svensson

I'm commenting here cause it's ya all's latest upload, but I just wanted to say... I would love to start my own YouTube channel w/ both gaming videos and movie analysis videos. WHM has gotten me though so many touch times, listening to episodes on repeat like comfort food while I'm at work or home. Maybe one day I establish myself enough to collab with y'all. Especially an episode on "Falling Down" by Joel Schumacher. One can only dream. I truly can't thank you guys enough for getting me through the last year. All the best

Merely Moore

Quick question, I'm not sure why I'm just now realizing it, but has the VHS trailer game gone away? I owned a VHS of this and was so ready for it.

Jeffrey Giorgi

Executive producer.... Kathleen Kennedy....yikes

Elliott Tipton

I second this, The Visit is ton of fun and has a part that really puts the "S" in DSB

Chris Rose

I wonder if you guys have any Portuguese speakers in your audience...

Felipe Sobreiro

Really tremendous episode, guys. Not only was it hilarious (heavy water, "ready for Ready", "we all fuck up at work") but it was great to hear Steve and Chris have such different opinions on the movie and still have a respectful and productive conversation WHILE making jokes at the same time. Funnily enough, I was more with Steve on the Vanilla Sky episode, but more with Chris on Signs. WaitWHUTyouary overall was a huge success, was really fun to hear you guys tackle some movies that require slightly more thoughtful conversations. 2025 is shaping up to be a banner year for We Hate Movies (and a bad one for basically everything else.)

Isaac Coleman

Listened to the episode and I need to rewatch this film because what y'all described sounded better than what I remember. Maybe I've seen Scary Movie too much and I got the two confused.

John Locke

Another great episode.

Dawn Elicia Billings

See I never watched Airbender that could be while I did not mind the movie.

Dawn Elicia Billings

I wish Angelica had been on this episode so she could offer some perspective on how much dumb white people shit this movie is

Smaug

Very similar thing happened to me when I saw the first Iron Man. When Tony is pounding on the door of the cave the terrorists are keeping him in, the projector broke RIGHT on the third "knock". Everyone sat there for a good 20 seconds looking at a black screen until one guy piped up "is this part of the movie?"

Matt

Good to know, for sure. It's on the always-growing to-do list! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

The Joaquin mistakenly using Spanish instead of Portuguese is 100% intentional, for sure. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Thanks, William! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I'm forever referring to this one as Twist: The Movie from here on out

Dennis Stack

I remember when I was 12 watching Jurassic Park in the theater and the power went out right as Samuel L Jackson said, "Hold on to your butts." And turned the power off, I totally thought it was part of the movie until an usher came in and told us the power went out.

Daryl Williams

A Gary the Rat reference in the year of our lord 2025!

Matt

A very funny episode. You guys only hit line drives now. I just couldn't get past the water issue of signs. That just dominates my thinking of the film.

William K. Wolfrum

Other people already translated the Portuguese in the birthday party video so I will just point out that Joaquin started yelling “Vamonos!” at the TV… which is Spanish, not Portuguese. And doesn’t even make sense since it means “Let’s go”. It has to be deliberate though. Another thing that gets me about that scene is just how realistic his reaction is. No huge scream or freak out, just a couple of short shouts and recoiling in pure horror.

Overflight

I don't think the footage itself is that frightening but Joaquin Phoenix sells the hell out of it, so you feel the build up of tension he's feeling, and the utter terror of seeing an extraterrestrial for the first time that he's experiencing

I.C. Weiner

They all loved BotW, and DS is just like BotW if it was boring. I also am unsure if the piss grenades offset having to walk around with a baby in a bottle the entire time.

I.C. Weiner

That’s why the invaders didn’t have suits or armor—because they weren’t astronauts. Also, that’s why they were defeated by water—because water purifies and baptizes. What about the lights in the sky—well we don’t know if they were spaceships.

Paul

This is one of my favorite fan theories to ever exist. It's one of the rare ones that makes a movie better. There's even rumors of deleted scenes that confirm it. But it makes so much more sense. Abigail Breslin is referred to as an angel over and over again and then the water that she has left is what burns them because it is holy water. Then you have the info coming out of the Middle East of the three cities that figured out an ancient tradition that stop them also works. It may not be the movie but it's way awesome idea to look at this movie this way.

Jon Wika

The perfect movie, even when logic fails. Cabin hD it right. Everything means something, the most film school movie to teach movies ever

Elliott Tipton

To express solidarity with Steve, I went back and listened to The Happening episode, and it still remains an all-timer.

John Edwards

If you recently started listening to the podcast and you're looking for classic episodes to listen to, be advised that every M. Night movie, without fail, is a great WHM episode.

Tim O'Connor

What a great episode!! And I too want to read Chris Cabin's essay

KRA

I'm already laughing my titties off and I'm only 20 minutes in... Thanks once again, WHM boys

Adam Schmidt

The reading that the entities are demonic in nature ups the film from 7/10 to 9/10 imho

RaggyB

I’m from Brazil… the kid is saying “He’s behind the garage”… The women in the background are saying “oh my god”… I’m sure you guess that was what they were saying lol!

Andy T. Rebouças A

I get the feeling you boys would like the game Death Stranding, given that its central conceit is that the only way to defeat the ghosts invading Earth is to, indeed, throw grenades full of piss at them.

John Edwards

Guy in his car screaming the answer when you guys blank on the vhs trailer game except it’s me shouting “Felipe! Felipe Sobreiro!” when Andrew asks if any listeners speak Portuguese

Chris Rose

This is one of my favorite movies and now one of my favorite episodes!!

Jaime Lee Ezell

😆

Jessica

Sarah Montgomery

Waiting for the Make America Spit Again tee to be available.

Stewart Moncure

Canadian here, I visited your fine city in 2010 to see Ween play in Central Park and was absolutely blown away by the amount of Nitrous vendors in the park. At one point some cops pulled up, scoped things out, then happily left without interfering. Literally saw more folks huffing balloons than smoking weed. A magical time

Hard To Gwil

And yet Song of the South is nowhere to be found!

Marty TC (child-sized Cardassian)

I was 12 years old when I saw this in theatres, and I literally jumped out of my seat at the found footage jump scare.

Marty TC (child-sized Cardassian)

I wish I could say I shared Chris's optimism that no one is going to try and reclaim Lady in the Water. I really do. But after having seen people respond to the new F4 trailer by trying to argue the Ioan Gruffud movies were actually good, I just figure it's only a matter of time now.

Todd B

There's a comfort in knowing I'm not alone in my trauma. VAMONOS!

Eren Keskin

I love watching a maniac try and play a gee goly gosh nice guy 😂

Purple Roundy

It’s not confirmed whether those were aliens. They could have been demons—which would fit with Graham being a priest and everything. That’s the thing—we don’t know and will never know. The whole thing could’ve been a test of Graham’s faith.

Paul

Heavy Water ... it's what's for dinner! Writes itself!

Robert Walton

There's a terribly ADR'd line toward the beginning about how she added a second, earlier show for that day...so no one notices when she DISAPPEARS before the second show???

Rose Esposito

Andrew, I watched The Visit for the first time last Halloween. I was blown away by the quality. Definitely worth your time.

I.C. Weiner

All I gotta say is . Cum has calories you need about 2000 calories a day. If you needed a quick snack....

Paterick Caddery

Clearly not, no! 🤷🏻‍♂️

We Hate Movies

They parody all of M. Night's scenes in Scary Movie 3 and for that alone it's worth watching.

Tala Hobballah

M Right and M Wrong

profondo robbo

Same. I've tried to figure out why it's so frightening. There's something about the way it moves and looks at the children, maybe.

Dominic Kovell

Mm-mm Night and Nn-nn Night? (Yours was better)

Dominic Kovell

Stoned, driving to work, Don Deluise laugh-wheezing to “High on the Hog” off “Heavy Water”

Daniel Cloud

Y'all realize Heavy Water is a T-shirt, right?

Robert Walton

I kid you not, I was making a joke about dog heroin/methadone two weeks ago. It's a sign

TDB

A fellow listener broke that movie for me when he pointed out "what major concert ends, and there's still daylight outside?" Thanks for blowing that one up, Rob.

MarkNM

Walt's magic is timeless.

MarkNM

M Night and M Nought?

MarkNM

Episodes like this are why I will continue to support the WHM Patreon even after the podcast tariffs kick in.

MarkNM

I remain a little horrified but mostly impressed that the gang can work such elegantly creative semen talk into almost every episode.

Matthew Mariner

My kids have been watching some of the classic Disney animated films recently and there’s A LOT of smoking in them (and racism!)

Craig

So there’s Royal Rid and Rotten Rid, but what’s the equivalent for Shyamalan? Shineamalan and Shiteamalan?

Craig

Only film I've seen with the depictions of tobacco use warning was The Boogeyman which opens with a baby having it's neck snapped.

Paul Deehan

Oh I definitely got a good laugh at that moment (and yes, also thought of it while watching Signs this evening lol).

Busiris

I still love that parody of Shamaylan's character ("Tom, I'm gonna need a ride home!")

Z

I don't know if the WHM gang remembers when they talked about mixing up scenes in Top Gun with Hot Shots! in their Top Gun episode, but that's me with this movie and Scary Movie 3. Ashamed to admit I've seen that movie far too much, lmao. While watching Signs: "Hey I thought Mel Gibson was using the toilet when he heard his daughter screaming outside? Oh wait, that's Scary Movie 3." Or "Is this the scene where Cherry Jones' ridiculous police hat gets progressively larger as the scene goes on? Oh right, that's Scary Movie 3."

Busiris

Thanks Paul! It was fun to host/produce the podcast, and we met some great people through it (including Eric!), but I am glad we were able to complete it's run. I greatly respect those who run podcasts as either a hobby or a job.

Predator Minute Podcast

Whoa—Predator Minute Podcast! I listened to you guys from minute one.

Paul

Is behind!

Predator Minute Podcast

1000% agree with Andrew on Trap. Would have been so much better if they didn't leave the arena

thecaptainofdeath

I've always really liked this one, warts and all. Not sure if it's my favorite M. Night, but I'm at least bringing it up if we're having the conversation. Look forward to listening to this one tomorrow.

johnny stocker

That alien footage from this movie is a Core Memory™️ for me growing up. Scared the shit outta me lol

Alex Murica

“Vamonos children!”
