Episode #785: Primal Fear

“[This movie] has the vibes of The Fugitive...” - Andrew

On this week’s episode, WAIT-WHUT-uary goes into legal thriller territory with a chat on the totally entertaining courtroom drama, Primal Fear! What an absolutely phenomenal cast, no? How hilarious is John Mahoney getting so psyched over all that Chinese food? Wouldn’t we all have watched that Andre Braugher Goodman TV spin-off it feels like they’re setting up? How great is it to have another movie where the great city of Chicago is a character? And how about that twist, huh? Can they make movies like this again, please? PLUS: Welcome to our new podcasters-only bar and dispensary, Pod Suds & Pod Buds™️!

Primal Fear stars Richard Gere, Edward Norton, Laura Linney, John Mahoney, Alfre Woodard, Frances McDormand, Terry O’Quinn, Steven Bauer, Joe Spano, Tony Plana, and the late, great Andre Braugher as Tommy Goodman; directed by Gregory Hoblit.

Steven Bauer is also GREAT in Thief Of Hearts.

Christopher Oxentine

Couldn't agree more with Andrew about Braugher on Brooklyn Nine Nine. The Halloween episodes alone.

Tala Hobballah

I loved that Andre Braugher played a gay, straight man. His ongoing battle of witch based insults with Kyra Sedgwick killed me.

Frank Grimes

Investigator for a hotshot attorney seems like such a cool job, lol. Some light B&E, foot chases, dropping off porno tapes in the dead of night and being a lil stinker on the witness stand...looks fun!

Chris Rose

Every time a listener doesn't format their Listener Request Month voicemail properly they put Cabin in the stocks :'(

T Herron

This movie was on every wretched WatchMojo list. Free Luigi and put them in jail.

Eren Keskin

God I HATE this trend of 'miniseries -- unless it's successful, then anthology series?' I don't need Presumed Innocent S2, I don't need Beef S2, we didn't need Big Little Lies or The Terror S2...yet another societal evil for which I blame Ryan Murphy. I swear he just ran out of ideas at the end of American Horror Story S1 and just went "uhh...new story!" And now it's a thing.

Rose Esposito

Bravo, gentleman. I was crying through the entire thing. I guess that's why I'm paying the big Patreon bucks

Keith Henry Brown

Imagining Gentle Giant Andrew flogging our beautiful boys as penance for getting some IMDb trivia wrong had me laughing on my ride home.

Derek Baxter

When I heard that Tim Blake Nelson was starring in “Captain America: Brave New World”, I thought he was playing President Nerd!* *Better movie. “Captain America, this is President Nerd. Stand down! Red Hulk is mine.”

Paul

I'm hope ing for some real stinkers for viewer request month because these guys are taking it two easy on them selves.

Mark D Myers

Come down to the Gettin' Place we have the new Splatterhouse for the Easter Season.

DMAC

TAAAAHHHHHM IS ON MAH SIDE, YES IT IS

MarkNM

Oh no no, nothing wrong with a movie that's not afraid to be a movie. That wasn't a ding.

MarkNM

God damnit why am I that guy screaming THE PHANTOM? Slam Evil.

Jonnie Sea

Hey, nothing wrong with slick and formulaic! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Oh yeah, it's been on the to-do list since the first Obama administration, but we will 100% be getting to that movie some day. It's a WILD ride. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I'm so proud these boys didn't do no hamster talk about Mr Gere. Poor man went thru so much

Paterick Caddery

Y'know, Roy Szyszka has a nice ring to it. Eric is fine and all, but Roy Szyszka is a name you can really set your watch to.

Jason

Given the direct mention of Fallen, I'm shocked it's not already an episode.

StylinGreymon

I LOVED this movie but have not revisited it in many years. Multiple personalities really had a hold on us in the 90s

Kate

I went to 3 years of law school and accrued $200k in debt for the privilege, all to learn what Stephen distilled in a sentence: If it happened before, you get to do it.

I.C. Weiner

The second book is just Martin Vail but book 3 deals with Aaron's return when Martin becomes a US Attorney and starts prosecuting militias Edit: Aaron is the villain in all 3. I only read book 1 & 3 because the "Justice Center" in which I was detained for 30 days only had those 2 availablr

James C Harris

An extremely mature lack of gerbil comments in this episode Thought Steve was getting there with his final “ass magnet” comments

RJ Cunningham

Primal Fear; a dark, gritty movie from when dark and gritty meant...kinda slick and formulaic.

MarkNM

Don’s Plum 2 really got me, we were robbed of the DPCU! It would’ve given Kevin Connolly something to do other than Entourage, Gotti and then producing the Entourage podcast

Aaron Dowler

I remember my parents watching this in 96, so I was maybe 11. I walked in during the "help her" part. Kinda a reverse "what are yoooouuuu watching "

Les Whinen

I just learned this a moment ago, a few comments up! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Wait, THIRD book? There are more adventures with Aaron? - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I thought the twist in the book was that the kid did have MPD but the evil persona was dominant. I know in the third book the evil persona evolves into an evil preacher who has a militia backing him

James C Harris

Me sitting at home yelling, The Phantom!

Josh Wurtz

First watched this one in a psychology and law class with a cool teacher that happily popped in R-rated movies when the subject seemed fitting. Was glad to revisit it tonight! I was 100% on the same wavelength as Andrew as this almost feels like The Fugitive could be happening simultaneously with this movie.

Busiris

Did you know that there was a trilogy of books and this is just the first part?

Robert Muse

I would have liked a Boozy Judge Shoat spin off with Alfre Woodard. Fuck knows I would be hammered all the time too if I had to deal with Richard Gere on the regular.
