Animation Damnation: DuckTales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp

"Scrooge McDuck is a dude that watched Wall Street all wrong..." - Andrew

On this very special episode of Animation Damnation, we're chatting about the only, to this date, feature-length DuckTales adventure, DuckTales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp! Is Scrooge so cheap that he's making children dig out an entire pyramid for him by themselves? How is it that Scrooge is just finding out in this movie that Launchpad didn't go to flight school? How terrifying is Christopher Lloyd's performance, even when he's playing an evil dog? Who thought Rip Taylor voicing the genie was going to get all the kids to want to see this? And how great is it to see a villain in a kids film have a classic "big fall" death? PLUS: Scrooge McDuck goes on Bill Maher's dumb podcast!

DuckTales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp stars the voices of Alan Young, Terence McGovern, Russi Taylor, Richard Libertini, June Foray, Chuck McCann, Joan Gerber, Rip Taylor, Christopher Lloyd, and Frank Welker as Additional Voices; directed by Bob Hathcock.

Having rewatched both Sin City movies earlier this year, I would say that they both qualify as Stay Tuned (whether the original is WHM or WLM is up to you).

Okay but there was a separate 5-part episode of the show that involved them trying to get a magic lamp, right? I just specifically remember that Glomgold was the antagonist - he actually gets the lamp first, wishes Scrooge to a desert island and then blows it by saying “I wish I could see the look on Scrooge’s face!”

How could you have forgotten about Danny Pudi and the iconic "Larry, I'm on DuckTales"?? 😢

Rose Esposito

My brain shut down before "the green one is" was identified. It doesn't even want to have to forget them.

Darcy

I think I'm slightly older than you guys so I did watch the Disney Afternoon stuff at the neighbor's house that actually had cable but was also thinking the entire time "I'm too old for this baby stuff, put on something else". Great episode as always.

Ed Harris

Does anyone else remember the Ducktales Genesis game, and was anyone else TERRIFIED of the Transylvania level like I was or was I just the king of little babies?

Matt

The only Nostalgia I have for Ducktales is the video game. But what a game.

Mark Ibarra

Wasn't that Harvey Weinstein's go-to pickup line?

Hearing all of these duck voices made me think I was watching a Tom Holland movie.

I think I was too busy screaming about turtle time to hear quck-a-bunga! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

After Launchpad yells out "It's turtle time!" Duey says "Quack-a-Bunga!"

Much like the majority of the gang, I had watched this as a kid. However, I didn't remember it until I watched it last night. Not even 10 minutes in, I was having a surreal Total Recall moment where it all came flooding back. Always fascinating when that happens. Images and scenes from the movie were just sitting around buried in my brain, waiting to be unearthed.

The VHS clamshell for this was a popular watch for myself and my sisters. For me I also think it was my intro to Ducktales as I didn't see the show till a bit later. I think I'd seen Darkwing Duck first so I remember being confused what Launchpad was doing here. It was funny seeing how they took bits of this movie in the reboot they did not too long ago. Also would love to see you guys do some of the classic Disney films like Aladdin at some point.

I gotta tell you, wishes or no, if I had to listen to 5 minutes of that genie talking and I'd have thrown him out the fucking window

I loved this movie as a child! Excited to hear everyone’s thoughts on it!!!

Matt Doenges

I picture an stereotypical old-timey Hollywood executive with the big smoking stogie and scotch glass with ice tinkling, dersively commanding: "Make the funny noises for me, mouth monkey."

Jason

"Get that freak Welker to do it!"

38 and this is one of my earliest favorites as a kid. I actually just researched the opening sequence a few days ago after talking to my partner about my memory of how shiny everything looked in the film compared to an episode of the show. I'll be honest, rewatching that opening I have no idea what five year old me was talking about.
