Once In A Lifetime #22 "Face of Evil"

“Take note, Lifetime, CBS is eating your lunch!” - Eric, on the fine quality of this film

On this eerie edition of Once In A Lifetime, we’re talking about the totally watchable made-for-TV thriller, Face of Evil! How outrageous is this airport bathroom sequence? Is this dad’s ponytail street legal? Doesn’t the little girl at the beginning of this movie look exactly like the feral kid from The Road Warrior? How brutal is that finger-in-the-door move? Who okay’d Shawnee’s hair in this movie? And did the writers of this film see Weekend At Bernie’s II or what? PLUS: Million dollar idea — a priest bar called HOLY SMOKES.

Face of Evil stars Tracey Gold, Shawnee Smith, Don Harvey, Brigitta Day, Simi Mehta, Mireille Enos, and Perry King as Russel Polk; directed by Mary Lambert.

Once In A Lifetime is a bi-monthly (every-other month) WHM podcast where the gang watches some outrageous Lifetime (and Lifetime-adjacent) movies and attempts to sift through the madness within.

I only know Shawnee Smith from Summer School.

Christopher Oxentine

I'm in Kansas myself.

YouTube algorithm gave me a banger, it's called Deadly Suspicion/The Governor's Wife and it stars Marylou Henner with a shotgun.

Ray

Random Tracy Gold fact: her sister, Missy Gold, plays the governor’s daughter on Benson.

Shylina

Genuinely shocked you think Shawnee’s hair is worse here than that wig they gave her for Saw X. Or honestly every time she’s in Saw and doesn’t have her natural/real long hair. They just keep doing her so dirty!!

Lar

Me: *In my Kansas home listening to WHM.* Eric: "She was flashing around all this money. You know these people from Kansas, they can't help themselves." Me: "Hey!" *picks up a large wad of bills and starts fanning myself* "Well... I guess he had a point."

Kemper

You failed to mention one of Perry King's best starring roles on the '80s TV show Riptide. https://youtu.be/4wvHSbwkWRo?si=_t1pQYJl-bO-gdoE

The Star Wars NPR radio plays have some wild casting. They managed to get SOME cast members back (including getting Hamill for SW and ESB, but not RotJ), but a lot swapped out. Alongside King, other standouts Brock Peters as Darth Vader Ed Begley Jr as Boba Fett (RotJ only, some other guy plays him in Empire) Ed Asner as Jabba the Hutt And John motherfucking Lithgow as Yoda.

“I don’t have to take this shit from these We Hate Movies boys! I’m Perry King! I was in GOOD KING WENCESLAS for Gods sake! It has almost 300 ratings!!! That’s gotta be something right?!”

Bolo Santosi

Omg these episodes are pure gold!!!

Chyanna Turner

My first Once in a Lifetime experience and both the movie and episode were a blast! Keep em coming! Now onto the backlog I go.

The Comfy Panda

You guys say paying cash for a plane ticket is decadent - in The Parallax View, Warren Beatty sneaks onto an airplane while it's on the runway (the '70s!), and then he gets caught by the flight crew and has to pay cash for a ticket while the plane is in the air! I was losing my mind watching it.

Tim O'Connor

I scanned through and that bag never moves. She ded. Edit: it happens but it's when the taxi driver tried to lift the bag. And never again for some reason.

Ray

Please cover Night Breed.

FiddlersGreenDay

Completely agree with Andrew about the final line “I was almost you.” I was honestly questioning myself like, “…was that was a fucking chilling and legitimately good line?”

RJ Cunningham

That's why my grampie never trusted painters. One day they're putting your body in a bag, and next thing you know, they're starting a world war.

Eren Keskin

I was so surprised to find out that Tracy Gold is still alive!

Jessie Drew

I could’ve sworn you guys did an episode on ‘Switch’ already

Kevin Lynch

I unironically love hearing how flabbergasted everyone is at pre-9/11 travel stuff. Movies like this are real time capsules show just how much things have changed. Now it's much much harder to get a travel with a dead body. Commando had it right, just make them look like they're sleeping in their window seat. Also, re: the ticket cost - I checked and that one-way to NY on coach in 2024 dollars would be over $800, which is insane.

Busiris

Pigs-giving playing on the Holy Smokes bar TV? Take my money.

Daryl Williams

*Brigitta Dau (not Day)

Brent Long

Poor Perry King. I just picked up an (unopened) copy of "The Lords of Flatbush" on a DEE VEE DEE antiquin' trip. My wife looked at it on the shelf like it was a dead fish. Coincidentally, I'd found a used "Mandingo" disc a few weeks earlier. She and the kids, ah...haven't run across that one yet.

Mark Ibarra

"I would do anything to have a guy tied up somewhere" I fell out of my chair 🤣
