Episode #758: Weird Science

“I’m scanning pornography into the computer to make a lady!” - Eric as George W. Bush

On this week’s show, we’re chatting about the 1985 John Hughes sci-fi sex comedy, Weird Science! How strange is it that back in the day, these creep-tacular incels were just considered harmless, lovable nerds? Why would they cut out all the solid Bride of Frankenstein conversation from the theatrical cut? Has there been a better titular song in cinema? Is this weird science, or weird computer magic? How cool is all the reversed footage at the end? And are those grandparents dead or what? PLUS: Christopher Nolan - huge Weird Science fan?

Weird Science stars Anthony Michael Hall, Kelly LeBrock, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Suzanne Snyder, Judie Aronson, Robert Downey Jr., Robert Rusler, Vernon Wells, Britt Leach, Michael Berryman, and the late, great Bill Paxton as Chet; directed by John Hughes.

Gotta tell you, your Patreon website is confusing and maybe the least user friendly thing I've ever experienced. Long time listener, you're better than this.

kirk rehm

Just heard the episode. This was one of my favourite movies growing, along with Lethal Weapon. Surprised you guys didn't catch that Weird Science was also produced by Joel Silver, of all people. The Hughes/Silver collaboration trumps Stallone/Cameron as the 80s strangest team up IMHO

Ross Tyrie

I used to watch this film and the tv show alot when I was a kid, haven't rewatched in about 25 years though.

Kureigu

Mazes and Monsters was a panic piece about how D&D makes kids suicidal. For the record: I love Weird Science. I think this is one of Hughes’ true works of satire. I love it so much.

Laura Coleman

I do remember watching the tv show and I can’t remember a lick of it 😣

Kardoor8

Anyone from Vancouver going to the Seattle show?

Jorge Guerrero

Banger episode, love conversation around outdated social material. Real stuck on the intro. I love my WHM equally - but Steve is my favorite. Why did Steve say otherwise? Someone get that man a high five and a beer.

Matthew Kennedy

I love this one. I watch it 4-6 times a year.

Christopher Oxentine

I liked this, saw it one a plane for the first time recently and thought it was fun. Do we ever find out what happened to the grandparents? Did she kill them??? Feel like I missed something there

Bolo Santosi

I didn't grow up with this, and I can confirm if you don't have nostalgia goggles on this movie is absolutely deranged lol

Alex Murica

Trying to think of a better “title song” than this one and I think the song “Hideous Mutant Freaks” (from the Alex Winter vehicle “Freaked”) by Axiom Funk would take it…if only if the song was just called “Freaked”! Oingo Boingo remains undefeated for now. Great Ep as always, (also you guys should do “Freaked” at some point if you haven’t already)

BBB

This could be a fun idea. One thing though- they already did an ep on the Jeremy Irons D&D movie. There's bound to be something else that could tag in though.

Todd B

Hey! She was in the last 10 minutes of Spies Like Us!

HockeenightsCT

I have to raise my hand on the “ anybody ever been panteds?” I was I was doing pull-ups on a pull-up bar And I must’ve said something really sarcastic to this real piece of shit that I went to gym with And he yanked my shorts all the way down to the ankles

Tyler the Destroyer

Funny how much of an 80’s forgotten stars dude Nolan is. Berenger, Rutger, Anthony Michael Hall, Eric Roberts… Needs to do a Bond film starring Ralph Macchio, Molly Ringwald, and Andrew McCarthy

Graham Trainor

Steve what kind of Splash Mountain did Caitlin Brie experience? Also Splash Mountain almost made me crash😂

Jon Wika

Christopher Nolan always came across as the type of guy who secretly relaxes by watching a Scott Adkins marathon on Spike TV.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Gary’s mother is mvp. “Ohhh here it is..!! 📞”

Jamie

Now I really want to see a “Weird Religion” parody

Rod

Team Steve!

Jamie

Oh man, I saw this a TON as a kid. I haven't really thought about it in years and am pretty sure it does not hold up at ALL. Now let me just push play real quick and see if the fellas confirm this!

Paul DeCoursey-Clark

I could shit in my pants MARK!

DMAC

I have just one question... HOW... DARE.... YOU...? 😂

Jeff Wanless

I definitely recall the feeling of boredom with the movie. Somehow it becomes even worse knowing that it's the sensationalizing of a real person that had a mental health episode, yeesh.

Busiris

It would be interesting to have an experienced D&D player come in to try and teach them the game and even stream a session.

Justine Prudhomme

As a member of staff in the British office, I can confirm that wanker has pretty much replaced tosser these days, as well as wanking replacing tossing off.

Tony King

The best thing about the Mary Poppins sequel is that Lin Manuel Miranda proves that YES you can have a worse Cockney accent than Dick Van Dyke

Jamie

“Irreversible” would be so much more watchable and far less traumatic if Oingo Boingo did its soundtrack.

Paul

I watched the show SO much and loved it. John Asher who played Gary was married to Jenny McCarthy for a bit.

FiddlersGreenDay

"Least likeable member" Shut up fave!

Tala Hobballah

Yeah, in the 1980s a kid couldn't POSSIBLY be messed up by the things happening immediately around them, there always had to be a spooky boogeyman at work.

johnny stocker

D&D turns 50 this year so I say let’s have a WHM D&D month! I know the game isn’t your guys thing at all but the media produced around it is worth the treatment. Episodes on Mazes and Monsters and The early 2000s D&D movie would be fun. Maybe stretch the definition of Animation Damnation and cover the live action/animated hybrid VHS that came with the Dragonstrike board game. WLM on the Chris Pine D&D movie.

Dan sulin

That kid it’s very loosely based on turned out to have a bunch of mental health issues and a messed up family life but instead of examining that the family and investigators found it way easier to blame his break down(and eventually suicide if I recall) on him pretending to be an elf in someone’s basement.

Dan sulin

Go figure that the 80's-magic/sci-fi from the coming-of-age auteur is the least timeless Hughes movie. I guess modern viewers won't stand for baloney.

Mark Ibarra

I watched a reasonable amount of that show because I was def crushing on that show's version of Lisa, Vanessa Angel. She was in that, Kingpin, and not much else that I can think of.

johnny stocker

Somewhere in Southern California a man has stopped playing sick acordion licks, picked up a yellow legal pad and wrote, in big block letters: "Yankovic does Noé = $$$$$!"

Jason

So many issues with this film in today's standards. As a Black American woman. Even worse problems - the bar scene omg....so many cringe worthy moments. Just standards in general. But - man I loved weird science growing up. It was also my first intro to RDJ sans Tuff Turf. The "Mom I never tossed off to anything!" makes me chuckle everytime. Maybe my interpretation with this film is this, unlike Y Tu Mama Tambien - the guys are too awkward for anything sexual and Keli doesn't have cancer.

Louis Brooks

It’s actually a really boring movie. “Satanic Panic” sounds fun for a movie, but it’s really about Tom Hanks’ character having a mental health crisis. It was partially based on a real life event where they thought a kid got lost in maintenance tunnels under a college playing Dungeons and Dragons “for real”. Turns out he just had and episode and ran off to New Orleans

Chris Walton

There're more Seattle-based movies than you'd realize! I'd cross my fingers for an episode on Malignant, Class of 1999, An Officer and a Gentleman, and the Ray Liotta movie Unforgettable, to name a few potential future shows in the area.

Busiris

Last Mimzy is set on Whidbey Island as is the beginning of Double Jeopardy. I think The Ring was shot around the area too

Darryl Bowen

I will say that the Tom Hanks Mazes and Monsters movie is worse than anyone probably remembers it. I compared it to Reefer Madness for D&D when I saw it a while back. All that being said, I'd also be pretty pumped if you ended up making it an episode someday.

Busiris

Curly sue I would say should be a stay tuned in the future if only for the belush’s involvement.

Luke Gordnier

I rewatched Curly Sue a few months ago...it's just meh. I saw it when I was a kid in theaters. My mom's boyfriend took me and I got grounded cause I said I hated the movie and somehow that was me disrespecting her boyfriend I watched the USA Weird Science show for a few eps, wasn't to into it but remember it being kind of fun.

Darryl Bowen

As a (Greater) Seattlite, I am hyper-eager to attend your virgin appearance in our fair burg. From the shadows. "Harry and the Hendersons", I think I kinda saw that movie once, a billion years ago. There weren't a lot of movies set in our neck of the woods, and, appropriately, they were usually set in a forest. Harry, First Blood, much, much later, the Twilights. We're all D&D Wood Elf Druids up here, apparently. Breathable air, drinkable water. Pretty mountains in the distance. Freaks, all of us. Still, it's a movie I approve of. I would like to see it again, or, for the first time. And Lithgow is always a delight. Even us PNW Hippies enjoy a large slice of ham.

Sarah Montgomery

I grab the butt, and also put my leg up

Dan Craftwerk

Ohhh, there's a LOT of meat on the bone with this one. Should be a fun ep.

johnny stocker

As a kid the double butt grab/kiss stuck with me. I never got the reaction they got. Guess I'll keep trying no matter how many times my significant other says stop. 🤪
