The Nexus #85 - "That Which Survives" / "Family"

On this edition of The Nexus, the show is back to its regularly scheduled programming with TOS returning to the show!

First up with that TOS episode, it's "That Which Survives." First airing on January 24, 1969, this episode features McCoy, Kirk and Sulu investigating a potentially artificial planet along with super-popular ship's geologist, Mr. D'Amato! The ep also showcases Kirk tossing out some anti-Russian sentiments, a rare appearance by Dr. M'Benga, Scotty trying to avoid murdering another woman, and Spock acting like a total jerk while in command!

Then over on TNG, it's the post-"The Best of Both Worlds" fallout episode, "Family." This episode originally aired on October 1, 1990, and sees Captain Picard begrudgingly taking a (much-needed) trip back to his home village in France. Along the way we see Picard clash with his stuffy brother who will soon burn to death in a fire, aggressively flirt with his sister-in-law, meet his nephew who will also soon burn to death in a fire, and get sucked into hearing about a childhood friend's new scientific endeavor that he really does not want to be a part of!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our series of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for podz and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

I noticed at this part of TOS, all the men have sideburns that come to a point. Some hair and makeup team decision I suppose.

the only time Uhura gets to take command of the Enterprise is in an excellent episode of TAS, where all the boys are fuckin gooned on spores and are tripping balls and eventually Uhura is like I AM IN CHARGE NOW and comes down in an all lady security team with jet packs and fuckin cleans house on some space plants, huge rec

I think the scene with JL and Robert fighting, mud and all, might be the best in TNG.

D’Amato 😂

I'm so glad Picard is a fellow Tim Sale fan

Just read the memory alpha for family. they deleted the scene where jack crusher talks about his ancestor who fought for the Confederacy in the civil war. And stole horses on the planet from Star Trek 5! The crusher’s were trash people!!!!

Re: Roddenberry. The sense I get from reading the behind the scenes memoirs and notes is that he is, like George Lucas, a good concept/ideas guy. He is the sort of person you would want to champion a concept, but you really don't want them involved in the technical writing & detailed storytelling process because they're not interested in characters as characters, just necessary pieces to push the concept. It makes sense to me why he'd see "Family" as bad because it's not pushing a concept; it's excellent character writing work.

lol - you're totally right! I completely forgot about that. - Andrew

My favorite Gene Roddenberry quote from the 50 year mission by Marc Altman “Never go back to front. Majel has a terrible infection “

Discovery season 1 features a stretch of episodes where they have to put nipple clamps on a space monster every time they use their experimental engine.
