Episode #695 - The Faculty

“But the stakes are high here, Andrew, we just killed the science teacher!” - Steve

On this week’s episode, the guys are chatting about the Robert Rodriguez sci-fi teen horror film, The Faculty! Has another movie ever done so little with such a solid cast? Are there too many characters in this movie? Shouldn’t they just have done all practical effects instead of this horrendous CGI? Is this the biggest chicken shit ending of the 1990s? And why in the world did they release this movie on Christmas Day? PLUS: The season 14 debut of the VHS Trailer Game!

The Faculty stars Josh Hartnett, Jordana Brewster, Elijah Wood, Clea Duvall, Laura Harris, Shawn Hatosy, Salma Hayek, Famke Janssen, Piper Laurie, Christopher McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Patrick, Usher, Daniel von Bargen, and Jon Stewart as Professor Edward Furlong; directed by Robert Rodriguez.

Thanks so much for subscribing to the ad-free (or up!) tier on the We Hate Movies Patreon! We know you have many options in your choice of podz and we very much appreciate you choosing us!

Episode #695 - The Faculty

Comments

I remember everyone in the theater laughing when Hartmet put on his science man magnifying glasses 😂

Purple Roundy

Thank you for this!! I haven’t seen this movie in so long I forgot about the scat lol

Sharon

This episode is what led me to become a Patreon member, such great work!! Laughing nonstop

Jessica

Denis Leary alone is reason to do that movie. Do Jusgement Night too as a double feature

Harrison McKinney

I guess I never paid enough attention to Harry Knowles before he was outed as a predator to realize how obvious it was if you looked at the shit he wrote. Looking it up now...woof.

Timothy Cameron Robbins Miller

I'm so glad you mentioned Suicide King as a stay tuned because that was my entry for listener request month!! Maybe next time 🤞🏽🤞🏽

LaShanda Pendleton

It's so fitting that Harry Knowles held his annual Butt Numb-A-Thon at the Alamo Drafthouse, another disgraced film geek institution.

Z

So glad they finally did this one. It was a great ep. When I heard that sonnenfeld call out by Elijah Wood, I couldn't wait to hear them tear into that. Also, the Harry Knowles stuff I was looking forward to and they came through and then some. Worth the wait. as a side note: Please do more commentaries. I love those so much.

True story

Melanie Decker

I'd like to speak on Stokely "bearding herself" and to give you a glimpse into Gay Girl World (something I have experience with); that b*tch is gay. She would probably figure it out after high school once the thing with Stan inevitably crashed and burned, but she gay. No doubt in my mind.

office killer was like god damn. What a pull

Frank Grimes

Sometimes, I'm listening and I think to myself "I could hold my own in the VHS Trailer Game" and then Chris makes these deep, deep pulls and I feel ashamed for even humoring the idea.

TDB

I hate to say it, but the Harry Knowles/Elijah Wood LOTR story is true. I heard Wood confirm it in an interview when Fellowship came out.

Craig

I always kiiiiiind of assumed they were secretly dating or something, yeah. - Andrew

Lol, oh wow, you just kicked loose my memory of that scene! That does make it funnier. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I don’t think it got settled during the episode and as a 10 Things-head I can’t let it go. The genitals in question are male. What the trivia doesn’t mention (which is dumb because it makes the trivia funnier) is that the scene they are talking about Keegan is actually drawing the genitalia on Krumholtz’s face “I have a dick on my face”. Great episode as usual.

HockeenightsCT

Omg I have also listened to that Columbine book many times, I know exactly what he’s talking about lol

Jaime Lee Ezell

Every once in a while my mind will wander and I will puzzle over the relationship between Famke Janssen and Josh Hartnet in this movie. Is it romantic? Antagonistic? Are they dating at the end of the movie? The what and why of their dynamic is still something that occupies space in my brain.

Alexander Farr

Back to school? More like back to GHOUL.

Michael Daniels

the harry Knowles dunks were top notch!

Mark D Myers

I think it already leaked into the Blade episode that drops on Thursday... - Andrew

I'm going to be saying "Columbine!" out of context now and it's going to be a problem

Matt

I could not be more excited about you folks talking Society. Capital B Bonkers. Thanks for everything you do :)

Hard To Gwil

As a big Scream-head, I remember being completely turned off by Cursed. But yeah, we'll definitely be going back at some point! - Andrew

Re: closing comments...CURSED is a bad movie but a better bad movie than this one. It embraces its stupidity more wholeheartedly. Stay Tuned, yes please.

MarkNM

Well, half-slander because Chris loves it. Check out my Letterboxd review as to why exactly I didn't think it works so well. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I tried checking that show out, but didn't get far. Should I power through? - Andrew

We Hate Movies

For what it's worth, Heartnett is really good in Penny Dreadful. The original 3 seasons with Eva Green.

The Wheel

I forgot about that movie!! Oof

Jaime Lee Ezell

The slander of “Massacre at Central High” is making me question my Patreon subscription :)

Kevin Lynch

The (justifiable) ripping on Harry Knowles this episode is just the best. I can't wait until hopefully one day you cover the *awful* "Fanboys", where Ethan Suplee plays him and has dialogue. Yiiiiikes.

Matt

Love David Krumholtz! Now we’re talkin!

Jaime Lee Ezell

That's what we had to do in the studio... just to be sure. - Andrew

Holy crap, that is wild! You gotta write in to the mail bag to give us the bigger picture! - Andrew

High school fight anecdotes continue; I am a mere freshman and two older dudes are going at it hammer and tongs in the hallway. They are really goin at it, throwin hands. The fuckin business/typing teacher shows up, this dude is thin as a rail and half the size of either of em and is also a total dick to everyone in his class so a lot of us are like oh shit Mr. H is gonna get beat up. Dude grabs one of the kids and just fuckin gorilla throws him across the hallway into the lockers like he's the Terminator; kid rebounds off the lockers, crashes into some spectators, and they fall down in a pile. The other dude takes a swing at Mr. H, so on fire is he and apparently somebody knows judo because he grabs him and shoulder tosses him onto the ground fuckin viciously enough you can hear the dudes skull make the bowling ball noise on the floor when he hits. Fuckin high school in 1990, i tell you what.

Winson Paine

The lack of ads is delicious!

Chris Walton

Before enjoying this ep, we should all have tall glasses of water to prove we're not aliens

Eren Keskin

I mean EVERYONE has seen Terminator 2. And especially in the film industry they know the fucking co-lead was Edward Furlong. It befuddles me.

Knut Farstad

Why in the hell did they name the principal Edward Furlong?

Knut Farstad

He didn't get that over the tummy rocker tattoo of “JameMaster” for nothing.

Jason

🤘!!!

Matt Doenges

spook-tacular coming early! I used to get this and urban legends mixed up

Frank Grimes

I adore these being ad free 🙌🏽

Ray

The “back to school” tradition of WHM belongs on the Criterion of Podcasts.

jribs

I read that as James Marsters. Would love a spike cameo!

David Lang

For a second I thought Steve was going to hand over hosting duties of the VHS game, but the JameMaster cannot hand over the reins just like that.
