WLM - True Lies
Added 2022-12-08 20:19:11 +0000 UTC
On this month’s We ❤️ Movies episode, the guys are chatting about the Arnold-does-Bond spy thriller, True Lies! How great is Tom Arnold in this movie? Did they honestly think they could get away with portraying Jamie Lee as some frumpy goblin? Why couldn’t there be a little more Charlton Heston as this dime store Nick Fury character? And did we really need the final 20 minutes of this movie at all? PLUS: Arnold and Cliff venture through Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood!
True Lies stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bill Paxton, Tom Arnold, Tia Carrere, Art Malik, Eliza Dushku, Grant Heslov, and Charlton Heston as Spencer Trilby; directed by James Cameron.

Just rewatched this one with my wife the other day and besides the obvious cringey depiction of Middle Eastern terrorists, it still holds up and slaps hard. My favorite performance by Arnold, hands down.

you didn’t fully appreciate the intro scene . Arnold’s swagger and confidence with that entrance is amazing

As soon as this movie came out on VHS I got my sister to rent it for me. During one part she told me to get some snacks so I went and when I returned it looked like she was fast forwarding. I asked what was up and she said the tape was messed up and I didn’t think anything about it. Years later I’m rewatching and the sexy strip scene is happening and I’m all “what the hell is this? I don’t remember this” then I slowly put the pieces together that my sister protected my 10 year old eyes

It's fun to see them back together but the movie itself is pretty bad

I was shocked to hear Eric mention that Anna-Nicole Smith movie Skyscraper. I’ve submitted it for listener request month several times! And holy hell - there is what seems to be unsimulated sex in this movie. I mean, terrible effects, wooden acting, wretched script, worse cinematography, but ooof…wild stuff!!!

Curious if you guys have listened to the Chapo episode on Avatar? They make a pretty convincing case that there isn't really a "white savior" problem.

If y'all do a WLM on Fish Called Wanda, I will weep with joy.
Just found out the other day that the 4 reunited in another film called Fierce Creatures. Xmas came early!

The greatest movie still going while the credits start rolling is on Beastmaster 2 with Marc Singer running off into the sunset with his tiger and it becomes obvious that Singer is just running in place when the tiger decides to stop

Atlanteans are usually blue. It rarely matters though. Atlantis in Marvel mainly exists to be the place Namor is running when he isn't being a dick to people on land. You really don't get a developed cast from down under the sea.

A couple of Cameron's scripts were co-writes (The Terminator w/Gale Ann Hurd and T2 w/William Wisher). Both had a big role in polishing up the dialogue. I don't think Cameron needs to step away from writing his movies because he's great at world building, but a more collaborative approach would be welcome. He should bring Jay Cocks back into the mix, like he did with the Strange Days script.

His movies are lowest common denominator. The Titanic screenplay reads like it was written for an 8th grade audience. They’re popular for the same reason Chuck Lorre shows are popular— they’re easily accessible by the most amount of people.

I really dislike James Cameron. I know I'm virtually alone in that. I think he makes decent tech demos but makes terrible movies.

In the list of Tia Carrere movies, I believe they missed Showdown in Little Tokyo. Which is fair, since she doesn't have anything to do in that movie other than swoon over Dolph "No, I'm Japanese In This Movie" Lundgren and get kidnapped by Shang Tsung, but I am a bit surprised WHM hasn't done that movie yet.

Andrew really hit the nail on the head. It follows a trajectory of white villains can be compelling and anything off white is a wild boar in a suit.
