The Nexus #75 - Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Added 2022-11-10 15:19:34 +0000 UTC
On this very special WLM edition of The Nexus, the guys are chatting about the most overlooked and under-watched Trek film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture!
How amazingly (and eagerly) does Kirk totally screw over that turd, Captain Decker? Would Lieutenant Commander Sonak still be alive if Kirk hadn't bogarted the transporter controls and just let Rand do her job? Has there been better model work in any other Trek movie? And can we please bring back introductory overtures? Because this Jerry Goldsmith score rules! PLUS: Don't we all want to hang out with College Spock?
Star Trek: The Motion Picture stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Majel Barrett, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Persis Khambatta, Grace Lee Whitney, and noted piece of shit, Stephen Collins as Decker; directed by Robert Wise.
The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support this weird thing we do—we couldn't do it without you!

Doohan appears in it too.

I read the book (I was that kind of kid) and there was definitely talk about the super horniness but I don't specfically recall Sulu having such a problem with boners in the workplace.

Yeah, Kings Island in Ohio once had walk-around Klingons and Starfleet members. It was a wild time.

Great america here in the bay area, California was once called paramount's great America. We had top gun, days of thunder, and other paramount licensed rides. I think there was a star trek experience but I don't remember exactly.

Oh man, my Pendleton sweater is my absolute favorite piece of winterwear. It was pricey, but it's the best piece of clothing I've ever bought myself

Moondragon is an outer space psychic and martial artist. In the comics she is Drax's daughter.

Yeah it wasn't for me. Even though it was superficially like Cinemania, Cinemania hit me more like just voyeurism. Whereas Trekkies was mean gawking and poking

Human compassion doesn't cost anything. The movie Trekkies is just mean spirited. It isn't really funny.

This is the first film I can remember seeing on the big screen as a kid. My dad took me to see it as he was a big Trek fan. I mainly remember being dazzled by the scale and the trippy effects. He’d also taken me to see Star Wars prior to that but I was far too young to remember that experience.

BTW I recommend a Side Order of Sleeze episode on "Pretty Maids in a Row." It is a 1971 movie starring Rock Hudson, Angie Dickinson and Telly Savalas; who are in a sex-teen comedy written by Gene Roddenberry! It's on YouTube

The Novelization (available on Kindle!) is pretty out there. I bought and read it 20 years ago. It is wild. It has love coaches, Kirk swimming (naked I believe) in San Francisco bay with his girlfriend (who we see in the movie) and some weird new race of humans called New Humans. That is an episode waiting to happen.

Also speaking of slashfiction my late aunt use to write TNG sex stories. She babysat me when I was younger and accidentally came across one and started reading it, she saw and freaked out. Wish I knew if those are floating around anywhere.
Also have another aunt who wrote a few Romance/srx novels. Both were Mormon so of course they were into writing weird sex stuff

Unless I misses you bringing it up, there was a book I believe Shatner wrote set after he died in Generations where the Borg come and did him up and bring back to life to assassinate someone. Also in it they bring up that VGer was created by the Bprg

Please, everyone read the novelization. It’s BONKERS. Roddenberry got asked to do the book, so it opens with Admiral Kirk saying how it’s what really happened, despite what you may see in other formats (Gene was fighting with the co-writer of the movie every day). This is after he IMMEDIATELY says the name “James” comes from his mother’s first “love instructor” with NO EXPLANATION.
There are footnotes that LITERALLY TALK ABOUT SLASH FICTION, there are indeed boners… it’s everything.

The Captain to Commander thing is a navy thing, there is only one captain on a boat and it is the person in charge so any other folks of captain rank are commander while onboard presumably to avoid confusion and out of respect

My wife, kiddo, and I all really like this movie. There was a time when the kiddo was watching it almost everyday during the tail end of the pandemic.
Gotta pass along a pretty good fan edit of TMP I stumbled across a few years ago.

I unapologetically love this movie. I love the fx, the fly overs, fly bys and I love the costumes that allow you to see the outline of everyone’s hog.
