The Nexus #52 - Star Trek (2009)

On this very special edition of The Nexus, the gang closes out 2020 with a lengthy discussion about the better-than-they-remembered 2009 J.J. Abrams Star Trek. Were the lens flares really that bad? Are we still cool with the Beasties on the soundtrack? And how rad was that Sulu swordplay? PLUS: Bones just throwing around "hobgoblin" in this movie?

Star Trek stars Leonard Nimoy, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, Bruce Greenwood, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Ben Cross, Winona Ryder, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Morrison, and Clifton Collins Jr.; directed by J. J. Abrams.

WHM is donating 100% of our 2020 merch income to causes  fighting for racial justice. For more information on how you can pitch  in, head over to our website.

The Nexus is a We Hate Movies podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at thesame time. Thank you so much for continuing to support this weird thing known as WHM! We couldn't do it without you!

I know it's been a few years, but the problem with Star Trek Starfleet Academy as a TV show is that the Academy is based on Earth and Star Trek takes place in space. If the cadets are in space all the time, what's the point of it being "Academy Daze"?

Blake Jordan

Will be The Nexus WLM for 2023!!! 😎

Cody Downs

Captain Pike, PhD. Would be a great Becker style show 😂

Ray

Me dip pizza in ranch oog oog oog

Elliott Steele

the problem i have with it.. is the 3hours it feels like for the ship to traverse that little corridor.. with no music.. just to show off the technology they have..

Bobthemime

I'm glad you have some love for The Motion Picture. I always feel my fandom for that movie is against the tide.

Doug Dee

😶 eating pizza w/ranch while listening 😶

Katie Ripple

Voyage Home is still my favorite movie. I hope one day you do it. Also do the other to new ones all pretty good.

Dawn Elicia Billings

Been meaning to write about Discovery, but you mentioned it in this episode and figured it was the time. Really, check it out. The first season was good, but the third season was like they heard Eric's complaints in an earlier WHM episode about them just covering the same ground (i.e. placing it in the same general time as TOS) and instead jumped to 3188 where there is no longer a Federation and anarchy reigns.

Mark Grabowski

I’m with cabin. This is my favorite Star Trek movies

Beer City Media

He already appeared in lower deck

Robert Muse

The movie’s commentary is pretty great and points out a few things. 1) It was the green alien girl who altered the test for Kirk to beat it. You can see her looking sour in the background of that court scene. 2) they had a monologue for Spock prime explaining how the universe was repairing itself from the time shift. Hence why everyone was coming together seemingly by random coincidence, but they cut it because it was long and who cares. 3) They also make fun of the lense-flair. Great episode! Can’t wait for you guys to cover the others.

Cody Robison

I’ve actually seen a handful of Enterprise and it’s no good. —ES

Scottie beamed Admiral Archer's beagle. Archer was Scott Bacula's character in the Enterprise TV show.

MavenCree

And yes, it's the same destruction of Romulus in Picard and this movie. The ship Spock flies was actually designed by Georgi LaForge.

MavenCree

Hate to be that chick, but it wasn't Spock's mom in TNG. That was Sarek's second wife. Sarek apparently DOES have a human kink.

MavenCree

Did ya’ll see that thing with John de Lancie saying he was going to be returning as Q again? Didn’t say what series, though. My guess would be Picard if it’s one of the live action ones.

Cassandra Wladyslava

It keeps getting mentioned so patiently waiting for The Voyage Home episode. 😊

Maria Laramore

Them not knowing who Admiral Archer is was driving me nuts. That's why I will continue to exclusively request episodes of Enterprise for listener request months. THEY NEED TO KNOW!

andy

That artwork rocks. I also noticed the "WHM" pins on the uniforms. 👍🖖

Beatrix

Scotty got marooned there for transporting Captain Archer's dog. Also known as Scott Bakula in Star Trek Enterprise. What he's doing in Star Trek? Idfk

Raymond McLaughlin

I think Eric had the right idea when he mentioned Vulcans might have purple cum. Prince seems like he may have been a secret Vulcan and it would really shed some new light onto some of his song lyrics.

Andrew Burt

The dog was the adorable dog from enterprise

Robert Muse

It is totally supported to be the same destruction. Since ambassador spock was from tng storyline and confirmed in discovery.

Robert Muse

“The Boys” is from the late 00’s/early 2010’s, not to be that guy. Wasn’t really my bag as a comic reader, but it was hella popular (kinda like the show). Great ep my dudes

BBB

So a few “well actually”‘a. The Star Trek comic EU does explain more about a lot of what went on. The Romulus destruction is the same thing from both this movie and Picard. Also the reason Nero’s mining vessel is so advanced(and green glowy) is that he got it kitted out with Borg tech the Romulans figured out. From the Borg cube we see in Picard apparently. This is all comic crap so who knows if that what JJ intended or not but it explains why Nero’s ship is so badass

Dan sulin

Also, the third season has been pretty darn good so far.

Stan Engle

Half-way through the ep and loving it! The only criticism....the creampie joke was right there when talking about Spock spunk!

Daniel Hood

Loved the the You, Me and Grunberg bit, hilarious

Andrew Donlon

We're be thee wales. Stabilize. Inhert designs, warp seven .

Life'sBottom

Oh God Eric’s forehead

Bradley Davis

Oh shit! Voyage Home! Voyage Home! Do it! Do it!! 🙏🏽

Paul

It’s hard to make fun of this movie. I think that’s the problem.

Paul

How can you guys talk about the Winonaissance and not mention her role in “The Iceman”? She was married to Michael Shannon in that flick. Damn, we missed out on another Michael Shannon “appearance” on the show. That always makes me smile.

Paul

We here Australians thrive with whatever accent allows for slurring words and not articulating anything clearly.

Jules O'D

Voyage Home was my introduction to Star Trek, so needless to say when I got older and looked into the show I was a little confused.

Vicky I

Star Trek: Discovery is NOT on the Kelvin timeline (this was cleared in a recent episode of the third season)

Felipe Sobreiro

Not sure if it was this episode or the Nightmare on Elm street one but the HBO show Andrew was thinking of was “First and Ten”. Never watched it but my parents had HBO when I was a wee lad and I remember the ads for the show constantly

Dan sulin

Oh I am so delighted by this early posting! This movie is a great underrated jem with a banger cast. Night made.

Alexander Farr

Ooh, it's early. Awesome!

Tony King

Already?!
