The Nexus 27 - "The Devil in the Dark" / "The Neutral Zone"

First, over on TOS, it's "The Devil in the Dark," which originally aired March 9th, 1967. This episode features all the disastrous Trek elements you hope to avoid like a cheap monster, little-to-no time on the Enterprise, and even some guy named Schmitter! PLUS: Scotty keeps accidentally making bongs!
Then, over on TNG, it's the Season 1 finale, "The Neutral Zone," which originally hit the air waves on May 14th, 1988. This episode, which should've just been tossed somewhere in the middle of the season, or at least split into two different episodes, features classic Trek elements like Data making Crusher revive the dead, Romulans messing with the Enterprise crew, and Picard getting frustrated by the obnoxious guy from Jason Takes Manhattan! PLUS: Picard hates uninvited dinner guests!

The Neutral Zone IS a continuation of Conspiracy. It was originally intended for the abducted colonies to have been abducted by the very same bug people as Conspiracy, who were going to be the main for of TNG after the failure of the Ferengi, but the effects department felt they couldn't pull of the bugs, and Roddenberry wasn't convinced of the idea so it got mixed for the Borg. But the original plan was for the last two episodes to be connected.

I think Devil in the Dark is generally considered one of TOS's best, for encapsulating its optimistic approach to unknown creatures and "monsters." But it may just be that it's a good episode in comparison to much of what follows it as the show slides into ever more embarrassing territory in seasons 2 and 3.
