The next video out on extractions&ire is the bromination of the ketal, the latest in the big scale cubane synthesis. As picture, there’s 300 ml of bromine! I’m yet to run the actual reaction— but soon- I’m excited! Video should be out mid March.
Looking forward, the next video after that is a ‘Making Yellow Pigment’ project, and for that we need yet another furnace!! This one was more expensive, but apparently gets up to 1600 degrees C, which is very impressive (it’s an induction furnace made for melting steel). We will need all that heat to make the yellow pigment, and after our success with using a metal melting furnace for powder heating in the Upconversion video- I’m optimistic that this will also work well. But then again- maybe it won’t… we shall see!!

I just discovered your patreon after you SHAMELESSLY spruked it in your latest upconversion vid. If only you'd spruked earlier I could have been donating you my dollaridoos this whole time. Oh well. Subscribed anyway, can't wait to see more madness ensue. Also, random question, any word from those underground Aussie chemists who had the robot lady voice over? Geeze it's been so long since I watched their vids I can't even remember their name. You know who I mean

2025-03-03 02:43:41 +0000 UTCWith something like chlorine which you can’t really store at all- you’d have to do that. It would be more complex… but really the thing that’s good about bromine is how you can control it. The bromine tin reaction needs a reasonably specific amount of bromine and needs to run at a very narrow temperature window. If you have another reaction making the bromine and randomly adding it to your bromination, it seems very hard to balance everything properly so it all works, way harder than it needs to be!

2025-03-02 06:08:56 +0000 UTCDefinitely would be possible to do, but it complicates the whole setup. Bromine is stable and can be stored, so practically it is more simple to make it separately and in bulk. Having fewer things dividing your attention during an experiment is preferable!

2025-03-01 14:54:19 +0000 UTCOk not a real chemist here so excuse this question if its a stupid one :P Is there a reason you didn't generate the bromine and then use it for the bromination reaction right away? Like just have the Bromine generator drip the condensed bromine right into the next reaction :D Would that have been to much of a setup or is there another issue with the idea?
