New Music – Inside the Lights

This is another ambient track, except inspired by some of the ambient music I wrote for Pico & Chill. I thought it would be interesting to try and recreate some of the tracks in Ableton.

This one is based on “Ambient 1.” I went through each of the Pico-8 “instruments” that make up this composition and tried to recreate each of them from scratch in Ableton. In some cases, it was easy to use my Pico-8 sampler. In other cases, because workflow is so different compared to Pico-8, I needed to use some native Ableton instruments (Wavetable).

Because these are now Ableton compositions, I eventually abandoned the structure of “recreating Pico-8 music” and relied more on Ableton workflows and effects. This of course includes using lots of reverb!

This MAY turn into a project of its own – using Pico & Chill as the basis for new compositions. There are a couple of things I’d like to try out for the next track. One is to use samples from THIS track to create new ones. The challenge would be manipulating the samples enough so they sound different from their source.

Another direction I’d like to explore is sampling the Ambient 2 instruments directly from Pico-8. As with this track, it will be interesting to see where the compositional pathways diverge. We’ll see what happens!
