Friday Thoughts Ep. 5 (Tulum Edition)

I’m going to try to keep this short because I have been in Tulum Mexico with my parents and youngest sister this week and today is our last day here!
Tulum has been relaxing, inspiring, fascinating, colorful and warm. The vegetation is absolutely dreamy, it’s amazing to see the same houseplants I have in my home in Seattle growing like crazy in the wild here. The bird song is loud and varied, confident and musical. The art reinvigorates my deep love of bright colors and folk patterns. Tonight I hope to visit the town and take pictures of folk style art, and definitely buy a few home goodies.
Speaking of Home Goodies, my friends, I think that this trip has guided me in the direction of ‘products’ with my art. I don’t know what this idea is actually called, but rather than fine art, book covers or children’s book illustration, comics, or visual development for film, I am interested in pursuing the art on useable objects. Of patterns, prints, stickers, pins, plates, pillows, cases. I’m love how so many THINGS in Mexico are beautified. Even the sink at the restaurant we went to last night had a gorgeous painted floral pattern. I will try to focus on this first. Maybe I’ll change my mind.
I’ll save the big proclamations for when I’m not on vacation.
In the shade on the beach I’ve worked on a few drawings on my iPad, including this illustration of Things I enjoyed in April, and the catfish digital painting above. I wouldnt call this a working vacation but I did accomplish some things.
I will also include for you my lovely patrons a few very rough digital sketches I’ve done as I’ve been here.
