Removed Script Sections from Beta64 - 3DS
Added 2021-12-20 14:10:20 +0000 UTCThere were multiple large chunks of the 3DS script I removed in the revising phase for various reasons. Mostly it was to keep the video from being over an hour long, and to be honest, I lot of this was just extra stuff that didn't really have much to do with the development of the 3DS itself.
Enjoy!
"Funny Haha Joke" Scrapped Bit
It's much easier to say “look at this” and shove a 3DS in the person’s face. 3DS was a very interesting piece of hardware to say the least, which is part of why it was so appealing to me back then. You’re telling me I can play games in 3D wherever I go without bringing anything special with me, plus when I bring this system to places, I can interact with people without having to actually meet them, see them, or talk to them? "History of the Mario Movie" Scrapped For Being Mostly Speculation
During Nintendo’s presentation at the show, Iwata announced that they had made partnerships with 3D movie makers like Disney in order to bring Hollywood 3D movies to the 3DS! And attendees could even watch a bit of Tangled at the Nintendo booth, I mean, if they wanted to. I mean, why play games at E3 when you could watch Legends of the Guardians and How to Train your Dragon? Here’s the thing, though, Nintendo didn’t necessarily say they were planning on offering 3D movies on the 3DS, but they did technically offer this on the Japanese eShop in 2014 with Disney’s movie Up being available to purchase in 3D. Something I had no idea about until I made this video, and may have been planned to be more widespread than it actually became.
Now why did I bring this up? Well in an IwataAsks interview that was conducted shortly after E3, Miyamoto talked about how the 3DS had ended up bringing Hollywood and Nintendo closer together. In fact, he specifically said that “A long time ago, there used to be a lot of unusual projects out there—off the beaten path, you might say—that wanted to use Nintendo's characters in that way, but these days lots of people say quite seriously that they want to make movies of Nintendo's characters. I suppose one attraction is the wide range of ages covered by our fans. If those kinds of people seriously work with Nintendo 3DS, some interesting things could happen.”
And fun fact, Dreamworks actually worked with the Nintendo 3DS at E3. Dreamworks happens to be owned by Universal Pictures, the same people who own Illumination, makers of the Mario movie… Seems some interesting things did indeed happen. (while talking slowly show cast of Mario movie)
"History of 3D TVs" Scrapped Section
Nowadays, this 3D thing may seem much less impressive, just because there’s now over 386 million of 3DS's in world, but when I walked into Best Buy and tried it out for the first time, I was blown away.
Now, it did make it a bit easier for Nintendo to market this console, because midway through development, before they even announced the 3DS, all of sudden 3D started to kind of show itself more to the public, what with the first ever live 3D broadcast in Janurary of 2010, and tons more of them throughout the same year. 3D TVs were being sold in tons of stores, and I remember a good amount of PS3 games supporting 3D TVs by the end of 2010. Then bam, at E3 2010, Nintendo announces the Nintendo 3DS system to people already getting invested in 3D content! ….that is until 2013 when 3D began being seen as a fad and in 2017 when Sony and LG stopped making and supporting 3D devices, BUT HEY, this was 2010, 3D was cool!
"Grandma and the 3DS" Scrapped for Restating the Same Thing Again
The fact the the 3DS could play 3D videos and view 3D pictures was an important piece of that puzzle Nintendo wanted. Much like the Photo Channel made it an easy, fun way to view pictures on the TV, the 3DS made it easy to watch 3D videos which can auto download from SpotPass and viewing 3D pictures was as easy as taking a photo and passing the 3DS over to grandma.
"Nintendo Touch Generations History" Scrapped Section
And this focus on making lots of general software for the system was part of the reason Nintendo’s Touch Generations was dissolved. You may recognize the brand from the corner of a few games boxes, and it was substantial during the Wii and DS era to show which games would appeal to a more general audience who might not normally play games. But now that it was way more commonplace to see games at your grandparents house, they felt they didn’t really need a whole brand to differentiate these types of games anymore. Instead, the 3DS system software was meant for the more casual crowd, with the games themselves more for gaming purposes with more casual ones being thrown into the mix just without a specific brand behind it.
"Nintendo Ambassador" Scrapped Story (the craigslist part was added to the intro instead)
phew, crisis averted.
And if you happened to be someone like my wife, who actually purchased the 3DS on launch day for $250, well you can enjoy a variety of GBA and NES games on your system as well as this slick ambassador certificate. I bought my first 3DS on freaking craigslist years after it came out, so I wasn’t able to enjoy these GBA games myself, but being able to play them now makes me happy.
