Dragon Heist Patron Exclusive: Justin's Running Files

UPDATE - The current version of these files can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/42208137

---

As a patron-exclusive, I'm attaching a zip file containing the final campaign-ready files I prepared for actually running the Alexandrian Remix of Dragon Heist.

What's different between these files and what appeared on the website?

First, a lot of my general discussion about WHY things were designed the way they were designed have been stripped out. I've also removed. Similarly, a lot of discussion about HOW various tools can be used during play have been removed.

Second, additional reference material has been added where appropriate to ease my mental load during actual play.

Third, light revisions and corrections based on actual play (some, but not all of which got reflected back onto the web pages) have been added.

Fourth, and probably most importantly, organization: The Remix series on the Alexandrian was written as a design-oriented discussion that ambitiously grew into a much more prodigious project than I had originally anticipated. The original organization was not designed for use at the table, and became even less useful for such as time goes on.

These files are organized for play: The first three chapters of play are clearly broken out, each heist is given its own focused file, and so forth. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to just look at the file list and instantly grok how they're meant to be used.

The only thing to particularly call out, I think, is that the props for each scenario can be found at the end of the file. You'll note that these are files are "watermarked" with the numerical code for the chapter (for example, "DH1 Props"). Why? Well, there are a lot of props. Something I learned when running my Ptolus campaign (which has literally HUNDREDS of props) is that my players will often ask me questions about a prop which they received weeks, months, or even years earlier, and I won't necessarily remember exactly where they got that specific handout. I learned to mark on the prop what scenario they came from (using a numeric code which doesn't spoil anything for the players) so that I could quickly and easily locate my notes regarding the prop.

These files remain dependent on actually owning a copy of the Dragon Heist book, of course.

Just checking, was there ever another release or was this the final version?

BrutusTheCat

Could you tell us what font was used for each character?

Christopher Boillot

About when would the corrected files be released?

The606

Me too! @Justin Alexander, really appreciate the speed and detail you put into this.

The606

Looks like the prop fonts didn't embed correctly, either. For the nonce, the Fancy Props PDF at the website should give you the printable copies you need: <a href="https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/42912/roleplaying-games/dragon-heist-remix-addendum-fancy-props" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/42912/roleplaying-games/dragon-heist-remix-addendum-fancy-props</a> And I'll work on fixing the embedding in the Word files with the next release.

Well done and thankyou. Signed up for your Patreon on the basis of this pdf mentioned in the blog post!

I was shocked at how good Chapter 2 is in actual play when I got it on the table. Like, I knew it was good (which is why I basically didn't touch it in the Remix), but it's SO GOOD at drawing the players into the life of Waterdeep.

Thanks so much for this! I was putting webpages into Google Docs, then opening 8 tabs at once. Well, thanks so much for the entire project! This is my first time DMing, and it's really helped me deliver a high-quality experience. If we ever get out of chapter 2 :D

Ah! The "perils" of sharing material originally prepped for personal use. Basically anything in square brackets or marked XXX is a note to myself to do additional work in the future. I meant to call out in particular that 2.0 Trollskull isn't fully completed yet. (I need to finish pulling material into it for the Tavern Time strucuture: <a href="https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/40758/roleplaying-games/ptolus-running-the-campaign-tavern-time)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/40758/roleplaying-games/ptolus-running-the-campaign-tavern-time)</a> But I forgot to acually say it, apparently. In this specific case, "Echo recording" refers to the text-and-audio recording I do of every session using an Echo smartpen. I ran the Grand Opening event without prep, and so my notebook has the quick 'n dirty party planning material I improvised. The note is here to remind me to pull that material into this document for future reference (particularly if I end up running the campaign again). (Party planning: <a href="https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/37995/roleplaying-games/game-structure-party-planning)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/37995/roleplaying-games/game-structure-party-planning)</a> Brief version. Guest list: Rishaal, Jalester, Floon, Renaer, Embric &amp; Avi, Urchins. Events: Let the PCs do a pass on laying out their "event plan" for the evening, then added a faction mission that they needed to do the same night, and a couple of minor specific interactions (Urchins causing a fuss) that seemed appropriate. Unless the PCs have really screwed up somehow / drawn the ire of soemone powerful, general focus should be on the Grand Opening being a success.

"GRAND OPENING [fill in from Echo recording]" What does this bit mean?

Carl Richard Hoopingarner II

Thanks, I already started editing the entire thing into OneNote a while back but haven't needed to get past Finding Floon yet because of how slow and meticulous my players play.
