The tragedy of broken tech...

A few years ago, an archive drive of mine stopped responding. I casually did some attempts to recover it, and it finally mounted again after some effort. I dug through and pulled off of it whatever I could, though a lot of the files were not responding or causing errors, because of some sort of physical damage. Obviously, this is not uncommon in the world of hard drives, certainly not in the classic plate drives that we've all known for decades, so I just chalked it up to bad luck and moved on. I did, after all, have a lot of files I wanted to recover, recovered.

So I put the drive to the side and kept on doing what I do.

Over time certain projects that I've done either popped up in my brain, or were inquired about by somebody else, and I went to look for the images – and guess how many I "found" to be missing in action? A lot. And how many were on that dead drive? Probably more than I wanted to admit. Or even remembered.

This is one of those projects. I do not have these files any more, as they were lost to the dead drive. The models had some very low resolution copies, which had been degraded in quality due to texting them something like 8 years back and, in that regard, we are lucky these even still existed.

These days, my file backup procedures are solid, redundant and have saved me from the tragedy of losing work for quite some time. But, that was not always the case. Lessons learned.
