Jumpgate #48 - A Day in the Strife

Gotta love a good pun title as we get to see an average day on Babylon 5... AND a return from our favorite Narn the Narn from Narn!

I loved that seasons opener, and one of the best opening title songs, just beating out voyagers opening song, by a smidge.

Yeah, I think that’s a huge part of what I remember from that storyline, too, and a large part of why Franklin was my favorite character and why I was subsequently surprised that Vera didn’t care for him early on. Now, part of my preference might just be that I always favor medic characters (see also Doctors Crusher, Bashir, and Ratchet), but I think I also saw the episodes where we see the fragility and self-loathing before the more egotistical episodes.

What I found interesting about the storyline is where they put the focus. Franklin didn't like himself very much, and he kept running instead of dealing with that fact. Before this show, I don't think I had seen addiction framed as being one of MANY steps on a self-destructive path instead of the addiction being framed as the only problem.

not exactly. He is more or less quitting and goes on walk about to find himself (which he does in actuality). There is a kind of sobering up and redemption arc for him.

To my memory, there’s no “very special episode” with Franklin… although the does lose his job and end up homeless, soooooo… it might be a little heavy-handed.

I think the point of the probe plot is basically to reasure the watcher (or network exec) that this is still a sci-fi show and not just people talking.
