Admiral Janeway is hot on the tails of the Protostar crew... and some frustrations occur.

It always irritates me when characters don't just say what's important and instead all kinds of misunderstandings then occur. Any of the Protostar crew could have just shouted out what had been done to the ship and solved things. 100% agree with JG. I liked that we got an explanation about why Jankom Pog looks different from other Tellarites, I wonder if being a runt is why he doesn't have an organic hand and forearm. The cash between Janeway and the Protostar was cool and I liked that she has crew members who will stand up to her when the feel they need to. The theory that the Diviner may cause the destruction of his people is very clever and that could very well be the direction they're going in. The return of the Rogue was a fun surprise should be great to see him work with the Protostar crew.

Further thought: *maybe* the accidental missile-firing was so that Janeway isn't shown as firing first. (A Han-Shot-First sort of thing, to insert another SW reference...) In that case, I can maybe understand the reasoning, but I still don't like it; Janeway is enough of a hard-@$$ to take a shot at the protostar drive simply to prevent them skeddadling away.

... I didn't find anything obvious on the eyepatch in Memory Alpha/Beta. It might be something as minor as implying he's a 'space pirate.'

Just watched the episode and your reaction... I think you were a bit harsh on the misunderstanding trope, particularly because overcoming misunderstanding and miscommunication is such an integral theme to Trek-- if there's no miscommunication, there's no story. Also, I think Pog, Gwyn, and Dal were all completely in character in their respective mis-meetings; had they broken character to cause the miscommunication, that would have been a big negative. *However*, having said that, I also did not enjoy the Tellarite doctor/Pog encounter. If we completely cut that unnecessary scene, the episode might have worked better-- they should have given Jason Alexander some better character to play, because I consistently do not buy the Tellarite doctor in any of his scenes. The accidental missile-firing was also utterly unnecessary and could have been cut with nothing but benefit to the story. One problem I had that you didn't mention, though, was the appearance of the Romulans toward the end. It's always great to see the D'Deridex warbirds uncloak menacingly, but there's a big problem: They are warning the Dauntless to stay out of the neutral zone *which they are clearly already in*. They shouldn't be there either, which Janeway should have immediately called them on, or have it handled completely differently. I'm wondering about Okona's eyepatch also-- he had that in his brief appearance in LDS; I'm betting it is a 'Beta canon' thing that is popping up into 'Alpha'-- will look at Memory Alpha/Beta to see if there's a reference or explanation.
