I'm excited!

Well done! It's a very well-written franchise on the whole, one I think you would enjoy immensely.

Colour is definitely a prototype in many ways. Subsequent books are much less laugh-out-loud comedy and more thoughtful satire, and that process already starts with The Light Fantastic. I was intrigued by Colour, entertained by Light, but by Equal Rites I was hopelessly in love. And Rites still has that prototype feel to it, but it does deconstruct the essentialist concepts of sexed (i.e. wizards' and witches') magic, and it does that beautifully. I read that book and I _was_ Esk, standing in front of the gates of Unseen University. I felt... seen. Also it's the first novel featuring Granny Weatherwax, and Granny just might be the greatest character ever conceived. Closely followed by Samuel Vimes, of course. Many people say those two are where you see the most of Sir Pterry himself shining through. Pratchett always had a heart for the small, the insignificant, the lost and broken people nobody cares about.

Indeed, I def have that feeling with Star Trek

I love how Sir Terry takes everyone in his novels seriously, even if they are "wash-ups", or weak, or non-normative, or some combination of all three. It's probably more noticeable with characters like Dibbler or Nobby or the Librarian, where they are crazy broad characters in a crazy broad world, but if you write them off, that's your loss. I feel like that's a quality that our world could use a lot more of.

Thanks for the objective review! I read "Colour of Magic" back in the 80s and have followed everything since, so it's hard for me to get that distance.
