No, Gina Carano Was Not "Cancelled"

Gina Carano was recently fired by Disney from her role in The Mandalorian. But was she "cancelled" or was it something else.

Intolerance in the context of Nazi Germany as opposed to social media doesn’t even compare tho. Say whatever you want but gird yourself for people to disagree with you and possibly be angry. God knows it happens to minorities enough. Remember that women (including Gina as well Kelly Marie Tran, Daisy Ridley, et al) very frequently quick social media because they existed, especially if they did a thing that male nerds haaaate because they ‘ruined’ some media they loved for being white cis het to the extreme in the past. People keep saying social media is a bastion of free speech but too often the mob doesn’t want to ‘cancel’ people so much as visit violence on people that did a thing or just exists.

I've got a lot of complicated feelings concerning free speech and social media. One of my favourite philosophers is Karl Popper, who (after having survived World War II, Nazi rule and the Holocaust) postulated that intolerance itself cannot be tolerated, as doing so ultimately leads to the destruction of what he called the Open Society. I.e. in order for a society to be open and tolerant towards minorities, it cannot tolerate movements of intolerance, meaning free speech cannot be boundless. Long story short, we need to have a global discussion what forms of speech we as 'western', supposedly open societies want to tolerate, and we need to acknowledge that no right, no matter how important and basic, can be limitless. As some people have put it: hate speech is not an opinion, inciting violence is not an opinion, antisemitic tropes and conspiracy myths are not an opinion. And by that logic a lot of what Carano put out there should not have been tolerable in the first place.

Rinehardt 68 Rinehardt 68 7 hours ago Jessie my problem with this whole situation is people who yell and scream about cancel culture they don't see it that way when they're canceling people what about the Dixie Chicks years ago when they criticize President Bush and people started smashing their CDs burning their t-shirts radio stations wouldn't play them some record stores wouldn't sell their CDs is that not cancel culture or Colin Kaepernick he took a knee because of social injustice and they made him out like he was the most horrible person and they took his job and he's never got to play in the NFL again that's cancel culture. But these people are fine with cancel culture as long as they're the ones doing the canceling. I think what Gina Carano said was absolutely stupid and offensive do I feel she should have been fired for it no but I'm not going to cry about it either because she's a grown woman and she knew what she was writing she took the time wrote it and posted it. Just my opinion but both the right and the left need to stay away from referencing the Holocaust because of disagreements we might have it's not even close. That's my two cents Jessie

Blerg, it's disappointing she's turned out to be this way. It's sad but it's good that she's being removed from things going forward. I've already deleted her from my inspiration folder for the story i'm writing (although i was using her for a supervillain so maybe i should keep her in?)

Thanks for the nuanced discussion on an issue that often doesn't get it. Also: enjoyed the rap again. Next time - backbeat!
