Black Mass (2015) โœฆ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hi everyone! Thank you so much to Nate Jasper for requesting this movie through Reactr. Yet again, another movie that I hadn't heard of, but what a cast! As expected, with this being a true story, I went and read up about the real people after I watched this and damn. ๐Ÿ‘€ [Direct link here.]

Looking forward to your comments! Thanks for watching!

Black Mass (2015) โœฆ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Just watched this for the first time. Short story. I live just North of Boston and went to high school in the late nineties. I had classmates from Southie and remember them telling stories of a man call โ€œthe White Tigerโ€ and how they always heard of him shaking down people near their home. Thought they were BSing me until I asked my mom about him and thatโ€™s when I learned of Whitey Bulger. Everyone around here has heard of him at some point from back in the day. Good flick

I think this movie is just okay but for me personally, I think Donnie Brasco is Johnny Deppโ€™s best movie and best acting role, which is saying something. Weird that itโ€™s another mobster flick though ๐Ÿค”

Jesse Plemons, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Harbour, Rory Cochrane, Adam Scott, Kevin Bacon, Corey Stoll, Juno Temple... not to mention Johnny Depp... the cast was stacked AF. Johnny was in fact wearing contacts. Joel Harlow who did Depp's makeup for this film, had worked with him about 10 times. They have a good rapport, working on Pirates, Lone Ranger, and Alice in Wonderland to name a few. The contacts went from full Bulger to a hue that was a mix of Bulger and Johnny both. Whitey was either super slick or super lucky. Maybe a little of both, having a brother that's a politician and a friend in the FBI. The FBI needed an informant and Whitey using that to run his empire without persecution - scary but brilliant. He knew exactly how to use his family and friends to his advantage. And to speak on exactly how Johnny's performance was so scary to me - it's how he was so soft spoken when he was threatening. How he could be joking around one second then be super serious, staring you down the next. And with those pale eyes staring into your soul... holy God. And when his boy got sick, when his wife said she'd pull the plug and his voice dropped to a whisper but you could tell he was pissed... that was one of the many moments showcasing how you're unsure just exactly how he's going to react. Barbara's another great example. He's nice and sweet then boom, goes off. Chills down the spine. Dinner at Connelly's house? Whole other level. Brings new meaning to "holding your breath" and "speechless". The moment Whitey shares with his brother after their mom's funeral... that's something I dread. "I've never heard this house so quiet." Short scene but perfect. I've met a few Bostonians in my line of work and anyone that was old enough to remember when Whitey was active said "you had to be there to understand". I wish I could say I can't imagine what it's like living in an area basically run by a mobster and you have no idea if you're going to be collateral damage or be put in a position of choosing sides, but given the state of things I'm betting that feeling's going to be felt by many people soon. What's even scarier is what they couldn't show in the movie, AND, what he was up to in those missing 12 years. But the fact he was beaten to death in prison is pretty fitting. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Still a 5-star film for me but I do understand and appreciate your thoughts on it. Thanks for watching! After seeing this reaction, there's another handful of crime movies Depp did that I'm excited to share with you once you get back :) Thanks again!
