Dark: Truths [1x05] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Okay y'all, I talked a lot here. Long intro, because I had a new theory after reading over the 4 episodes so far on the Dark Wiki site. And then I had another theory after watching this episode. [Direct link here.]

My brain is so much less confused now that I've taken a ton of notes and made my family trees!!

Looking forward to your comments!

I wonder if it has to do with the old saying: "The eyes are the windows to the soul."

That's certainly a question. I'm so curious how the burned eye kids play into all this.

Imagination is unlimited with these show runners!

Mikkel's arc is super sad. He just wanted to get back home. 😭 And thank you, by the way!

Haha that realization def came later!

I am so glad they utilized the split screen in the opening. It helped link a few things together that might have been missed. The casting is spectacular. Once you figure out who's who, past and present, the similarities start falling into place. Any time someone asks "Can I trust you not to tell anyone?", just say no. No one needs that kind of drama in their life LOL Dammit, I should have known Noah, the man assumed to be taking children, was a damn priest. But why kids? Is it because their curiosity is easy to manipulate? Or does it have more to do with their minds being more open to impossible possibilities? Teens absolutely will do it anywhere. Their backs aren't broken yet and they love the thrill of breaking the rules and risking getting caught. Okay so the question I'm left with is, are all the adults who are "in on it" ensuring the kids "disappear" so that the past events happen as they happened and nothing gets changed? Those kids have to go back to the past so that things play out and keeps the timeline secure? What would happen if one of them didn't go back? Would there be disastrous consequences?

To be clear the hooded man hooking up Eric to the machine is not the same as the hooded stranger holding the briefcase and wearing the backpack. One has a rain coat the other a jacket with a hood. Also the stranger is always shown with his face.

Just have to say I'm loving this rewatch and you are doing a much better job than I did keeping everything straight the first time I watched it. Haven't commented a whole lot, because it's difficult not to spoil or even just hint at something. The only thing I'll say is: I haven't researched the creator(s) of this show, but their imagination is a lot bigger than mine!

OH SHOOT THIS SITE IS FANTASTIC. I will just use this from now on cause it is fun to explore - thank you so much!

I am glad you are feeling more confident with the characters and connections! Although I will warn you - Dark loves to throw more at you every time you think you know what is going on! The official Dark website is also a great resource because you enter your season and episode number before entering the site for a spoiler free experience! https://dark.netflix.io/en

That was a fun reaction. I’m glad it was long. It was worth it. And I am pleased you have your notes and family trees. I wasn’t sure if you initially caught 1986’s Katarina and Hannah’s friendship and dynamic. Katarina isn’t that nice to young Hannah, but Hannah certainly raised the stakes on that front in this episode. FYI in the second episode we see the hooded man hook Erik up to that machine and later he’s seen dragging a bag/body through the woods in the dark and you can faintly see bright red hair and burned-out eyes like the other dead body we have. RIP Erik. This can be a hard show to follow even when you’re not doing it in front of a camera, so I think you’re killing it, but now that you have the family trees down, there are a lot of clocks, knots, mazes and black holes that are seen and discussed and are fun to note and think about IMO. Also Latin. Because why stop at German. I love the Mikkel reveal (and kudos to you), but one of my first thoughts afterwards was that he had an extensive detailed map that never seemed to locate what he was looking for and it seemed like he never really stopped trying to get home until he realized he was out of time and ‘gave up’. Such a tragic character arc.

I don't know how you missed the biggest ick that the ending revealed. I was forming a family tree in my mind as I watched each episode so as soon as the Mikkel/Michael reveal occurred I saw it. Before Michael killed himself, Jonas and Martha had a relationship and if Michael wouldn't have killed himself then their relationship would NOT have stopped. Noah would probably quote Leviticus 18:12.
