We don't actually see colors.
The sensation of "color" appears in the human brain and eyes. An object appears colored to us if it reflects or transmits light only in a narrow range of wavelengths and absorbs all the rest.
Red absorbs all colors except red. Well and accordingly it emits only red.
If we shine a green lantern on a red sofa, the sofa will appear black to us.
Because red will absorb green, and it will not be able to reflect anything.
Complete absorption of colors without reflection - gives black.
