Johnny vs. DmC: Devil May Cry (AD-FREE)

Thanks again Gallant, for the Martin Short joke.

Let's talk DmC: Devil May Cry, the one where Dante and friends do a funny. In all seriousness, I was really looking forward to getting into this one because of it's notoriety, so, what did I ultimately think of it? You might be surprised, or not.

I’m back after this video got censored on YouTube. The Patrons will have the uncensored version FOREVER! XD

The Role Playing Gamer

Yeah I was hoping he would have a bit more to say on that aspect but it was kind of glanced over.

Heather McKnight

I completely agree. I also really like the angle they were going for especially with parts of the story being inside his head.

Weirdly enough, that original TGS trailer also had more creative enemy design. The weird cyberpunk aesthetic was so much more interesting.

Inhuman Paradox

I was hoping you'd go a bit deeper into the horrendous, racist and sexist attitudes thrown at DMC by Tameem and his cult of journalists hyping this game up like it was Metal Gear Solid level deep. I'm not kidding, the devs literally used the words "It's Shakespearean". But there was, in all of that, an underlying anti-Japanese sentiment. "Japanese is goofy, Western is DEEP" was the message behind all of it, and beyond that, Tameem blatantly slut-shamed DMC's female characters (Meanwhile his only female character is a complete prop of the plot who doesn't do anything). FFS, a line in the OG game (Removed by Capcom in the Definitive Edition, which had no Ninja Theory involvement) was "The world is your b*tch and so am I. All that's left is to bend it over and f**k it". I'm not kidding, that was Tameem's idea of progressive "deep" writing.

Inhuman Paradox

Saw the YouTube upload notification literally right after I got off of work, so I waited to get home to peep the video. Well worth the wait! After finishing the video, I can definitely say that I don't dislike the story anymore. I never hated it or anything like that, but it just didn't do much for me back when I played the original version on 360 back when the game first came out. Looking forward to getting the Definitive Edition at some point now, thanks for the video Johnny keep up the great work!

Thanks for the shout out Johnny. You have made this day 20% cooler. Another amazing review as always Johnny. I'm sorry to say that I don't share the same opinion on the game that you do but I still had a lot of fun watching it. Unlike most I actually liked the Tokyo game show trailer and I would have loved to see the concept presented there as a full game. Here's the thing when this game came out I thought it was going to be a prequel to Devil May Cry 3 and I liked that idea along with the original trailer. If they had gone in that direction I honestly think it could have worked. I was disappointed when it was announced to be a reboot but even still I did give it a fair shot with the original version and I put it down after beating it. From a gameplay standpoint the game is fine it's on par with some of the other entries in the series. I found the story to be predictable with backhanded jokes that were beyond juvenile. It honestly feels like they wanted to make a video game version of the film They Live, because that's where most of the story comes from. The only character I grew to actually like was Dante but I would take every other Dante including Devil May Cry 2 Dante over him. The art direction is dull and murky. If it didn't have the name Devil May Cry I honestly think it would have had a better chance standing on its own because the comparisons to the original series are not flattering. The character and monster designs I found to be lazy or generic. What's the point in even having a Devil Trigger when all it does just swaps the colors on your character. It's like they were taking design inspiration for unimpressive transformations from Dragon Ball Super. These are just my opinions and if you did like the game then all the more power to you.

No doubt this'll get the comments section stirring, but don't let them get to you Johnny. Proud of you for sticking to your guns and not being afraid of speaking out your opinion!

Been a long time since i played it and ive played all to completion except 5. I do remember this one hooking me more than 3 gameplay wise and wanting to finish it. I digged the changing level design and even liked dante for different reasons. He wasnt cool like you mentioned but he is a badass. Which is fine for this type of game. While dante from 3 is memorable for his laidback goofball personality. They are roughly the same in terms of enjoyability from what i can remember and both 3 and dmc are good starting points imo. Its a shame i think if the lead pr guy wasnt so "protective" of his vision he could have won some people over and wether we like it or not being able to sell something to people without being condescending is a skill and factors into business success. I do think as a dmc fan you have to go in with a this will be different and let me see whats up attitude.

I love how thoroughly amused John was when he anticipated the fetus getting shot.

Flash The Monkey

I think this game would have been better regarded if it weren't named Devil May Cry. Because yeah, it's pretty good! I don't like the story but the gameplay is pretty cool! But because it's a DMC game, it's gonna be compared and to me, it falls short. And to think, this game came out the same year as REVENGEANCE. Let's just say I revisit one far more than the other

Ooh, I can't wait to see the reception to this one

XenoSonic1

it makes total sense why Virgil had a fedora in the original lol

Jake

Great review as always Johnny! Can't wait to see the hellscape that will be the youtube comments section

I’ve said it many times before, but the one thing that would have saved this game would be if it had nothing to do with Devil May Cry. It’s got perfectly fine combat, but… I had a physical headache by the end of Vergil’s downfall. For multiple reasons.

Perfect Timing! I literally just started my Lunch here at the office.
