Interesting. Yeah I'm only about a quarter of the way through the book and he's just getting into the new left stuff in the early 60s. He definitely frames the new left as being a slightly modified variant on his parents literal communism. To my (untrained) eyes it seems close enough, but I'm sure it deviates from Marxist doctrine. From what I've read so far about new left guys seems like they were trying to make an americanized version of a socialist revolution, but I guess this is all filtered through horowitz after his right wing turn

He was a member of the new left in the US. The new left pretends to be a form of marxism/communism, but it disagrees with most of the fundamentals. In fact, the new left is just a form of progressive liberalism that, in theory, is advocating for extreme individual freedom. Horowitz parents were literal tankies - 'real' marxists
