Abortion has been my parents’ go-to rage fuel since they had me reading Focus on the Family pamphlets as a child; today, when they start an argument about politics and then start *losing,* they’ll steer the conversation as hard as they can towards the most emotionally caustic subject in their arsenal to try and gain the upper hand. But your observation about viewing children as property really helps put a lot of things in perspective. To this day, with both of their adult children (one of them married with two kids of her own), they continue to offer unsolicited “advice” and get really pissed off when it isn’t followed (which isn’t advice, but a command). Hell, the rift between them and I was severely exacerbated when they fought me tooth and nail for a goddamned year to get rid of my girlfriend they’d never even spoken to because she wasn’t Christian. Them seeing me as not just property, but *defective* property makes a lot of sense.
