The books spend more time explaining this, but in the GOT universe, serving your guests bread and salt is what seals your sacred duty as host. To do it and then murder them is just about the single most abominable crime you can commit, in the eyes of both the old gods and the new. In the books I believe it is even more sad when Cat tries to reason with Walder Frey she says that Robb is her "first and last son". Meaning that Catelyn died thinking that all of her sons were dead. Also, in the books all the stark children are wargs like Bran and can enter the mind of their wolf. So Robb died twice, once in his human body and another time in greywind, his wolf.

I've been waiting for this, equal parts dread and excitement, ever since the first episode of this reaction series. No need to apologize for the outro. Everyone handles this scene differently. The bread and salt when they first came in? That was a ceremony giving them guest right. Once the host has shared food with the guests, he's made a solemn vow to the gods not to harm them. He didn't just kill our favorite characters; he defied the gods and spat on the Westerosi ideals for human decency. Just... holy shit this scene.

Oh Hannah, sending you virtual hugs from halfway across the world. When this episode first aired I had no idea what was coming either. I had grown such an attachment to Catelyn Stark, she was, one of my most favorite characters. The whole time I watched I was internally screaming and hoping she would be able to get away. When they killed her I lost my shit entirely. But I do encourage you to keep going as painful as it is moving forward without those characters because there is some amazing episodes coming up that are going to make you smile again. Take a break after season 3 if you need it, we all did. I'm very glad Ash was there for you as well.

This was a heart breaking episode and believe or not is actually what created reaction channels pretty much, the reactions to this episode were so visceral and book readers knew they had a jackpot and recorded their friends who hadn’t read the book watching the show for the first time and the rest is history.
