The Character in Penthouse was truly shocking and extremely offensive. Can’t believe it even happened in 2021. Didn’t the cast take part in an anti-racism campaign a week prior to this episode being aired? How ironic. Following on from the Backstreet Rookie controversy you would think the writers would know better than to do this; sadly it appears they do not. Considering this isn’t the first time we’re seeing this in a K-Drama I can only conclude that it was done deliberately to demean and ridicule black people. This wasn’t an innocent “mistake” they developed that character, wrote lines, designed wardrobe etc. So they knew what they were doing. Yes, as per usual when racists are called out the writers can claim they didn’t mean any “harm”, but it does not negate the fact that harm was caused. Racism does not always manifest as the KKK burning crosses on your front lawn or the use of racial slurs; sometimes it’s insidious and packaged as “harmless” entertainment. All that to say this incident reeked of racism and anti-blackness. Korean entertainment is clearly enjoying an international boom in (Music, TV, and film) and is exported around the globe, the least Korean creatives can do is be mindful and respectful of their global audience (of every race). We have seen on other occasions where K-pop is blatantly disrespectful of black people and black culture. Yet, they profit from that same culture and infuse into other aspects of Korean culture (K-Hip Hop, K-Pop, R’n’B, B-Boying, Breakdancing etc.) If you are taking it upon yourself to profit from someone’s culture the bare minimum required is to be respectful. Feigning “ignorance” about racial insensitivity is no longer a sufficient excuse. The Penthouse writers were wrong for this.

I completely understand the outrage from the drama Penthouse. Having watched the first season of the show, Logan, the character's brother was also depicted as coming from America, however, did not show the stereotypical African-American characteristics. I honestly, think they were trying to portray different sides of Korean- international characters, however, poorly as it may be. I am just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, as I understand it must be difficult to understand living in a homogenous society. However, as people have discussed, we are living in the 21st century, so they should understand the backlash.

I seriously don’t understand what DSP is thinking? Where is their PR team? It got so messy

Honestly, I found it really shocking. In this day and age? Feigning ignorance is no long an excuse. We saw this same demeaning depiction of black people in Backstreet Rookie. If it happens more than once it’s no longer a “mistake” but rather a deliberate depiction, and they are well aware of what they are doing. Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you. It’s such a shame and that character was totally unnecessary.

Another honorable mention for stereotyped k characters… I think of Backstreet Rookie. Of course the offending character wears deadlocks that are depicted to be dirty and stinky (flies surrounding his head and comments from others imply this) Scenes and characters like those from Penthouse and Backstreet Rookie are problematic and annoying because they create automatic association to an uncritical viewer… Also don’t stop speaking on these issues, I know it’s annoying to have people down your throat but I deal with these stereotypes on a daily basis, I hate it!!!!! and no one will listen/be aware otherwise😭😭😭😭

Looking forward to the sexual assault/military case topic. And I do appreciate u guys bringing up these topics such as the Sam O. one despite the criticism, it’s important to bring awareness and start discussions on these issues.

Clara

Major yikes at that penthouse character lmao

Johanna

It is exhausting to constantly have African-Americans portrayed as if we all are characters in a rap video or gangsta movie. The vast majority of us live nothing like that. We are just like everyone else. We appreciate living life drama free, peacefully, enjoying good times with family and friends. This stereotype point blank is shitty. It would be like every portrayal of Asians being yakuza, gang members, drug dealers or pimps based on the few instances that exist in Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Seoul (yeah you have some I’ve seen them), etc. They exist but I don’t use that as the stereotype for Asians and raise hell whenever anyone tries to pull the old Asian women massage parlor or submissive trope. That crap is just wrong on all levels and needs to stop. It’s rude, disrespectful, and negates the reality of the true lives of most members of the minority group.

Okay. I heard about the character from Penthouse. I hadn't seen it until Friday. I literally looked at the screen and said WHY?!!! It's 2021. It's no excuse for this. At all. I'm not giving this a pass. My "day job" is I'm in Racial Equity/Diversity Inclusion Specialist. My job is teaching local politicians/ elected officials about others ethnicities, how not to be offensive/insensitive toward other cultures. You can't tell me that someone on this staff didn't think this character appearance wouldn't be offensive. It's also annoying that's it's consistently Black people that are made fun of....again, in 2021. It's viewed as Anti-Blackness in our culture and is a huge issue as the K-pop, K Rnb, K hip hop, K hip-hop dancers have profited from Black culture. It's disappointing and disrespectful. Can we legit discuss this? I'd love to come teach a few sessions and have open dialogue.
