In the private training grounds belonging to the Gremory family just outside of Kuoh, an intense battle was taking place.
On one side were the Knight of Rias Gremory, Yuuto Kiba, Queen of Rias Gremory, Himejima Akeno, and Rias Gremory herself.
On the other side was the infamous stray exorcist, Freed Sellzen, who grinned viciously while holding a true holy sword.
The holy metal that made up the sword glinted in the sunlight and gave off waves of light energy, making the devils extremely uncomfortable.
With an unseen signal, the group moved as one.
Rias Gremory charged up her power of destruction in a single second, a tremendous improvement over the ten seconds it would take her previously, and shot the orb of energy at the human.
At the same time, Yuuto Kiba moved so fast that sonic booms rang out across the clearing, deafening the remaining members of the Peerage who were lying exhaustedly on the sidelines and watching the battle along with the Sitri Peerage and the Church girls.
His sacred gear, Sword Birth, working overtime to rain down demonic swords on the human.
Right by the side of her king, Akeno charged up her lightning spells and rained them down as if she were divine punishment personified, her potent and exaggeratedly huge quantities of demonic energy working in her favor.
With three different kinds of attacks heading straight for him, any being would be at least slightly worried for their safety. They would either try to dodge the attack or find a way to take out the attackers before they could complete their spells.
However, Freed only grinned maniacally and stood in place, raising the sword given to him by his employer in a perfect stance.
As the power of destruction arrived at his location, just a few centimeters from his body, he suddenly moved a tiny amount, allowing the orb to sail right past him and erase a small hill behind him.
Just a fraction of a second later, Kiba appeared with his sword, trying to lock the stray exorcist in place while he rained down swords as if they were bullets fired from a gun.
However, Freed took advantage of his prodigious sword skills and engaged the Knight in a duel, soundly defeating the Devil in pure skill and cutting through every single sword mid-air as they were shot out by Kiba’s sacred gear, showing the sheer difference in quality between Freed’s holy sword and Kiba’s demonic swords.
With a sudden maneuver, Freed threw his sword into the air and used grappling techniques to throw Kiba into the air.
Directly into the path of the incoming lightning attack.
As Kiba screamed in pain at the attack, Freed used this distraction in the group to his advantage.
Jumping to his sword, which was still twirling in the air, Freed caught the blade and shot forward, straight towards his next target.
With a swift strike, he directly cut through the defensive clothing that Rias wore, stabbing her straight through her abdomen and flooding her body with holy energy, making her scream in pain.
With Kiba out of commission thanks to the lightning strike and Rias down for the count, Freed finally moved towards his charge, who had already put up barriers around herself and was charging another lightning strike.
With a single strike, he tore right through the defenses that Akeno put up and made a deep gash on her extended arm.
Recognizing the potential for harm towards its master, the Rosary around Akeno’s neck activated and pushed Freed back, temporarily registering him as a threat despite being set to training mode by Akeno, as shown to her by Ren.
This move instantly marked the end of the spar since the artifact would not stop working until Freed stopped attacking, making the man click his tongue in annoyance.
“Damnit! Boss-man really rigged the game against me, didn’t he?”
“I think he made the right choice. If not, who knows how far you would go in a simple spar?”
Sona Sitri's neutral voice made the mad exorcist grin at the girl.
“You know me too well, Devil bitch. Were you stalking me or something?”
He lecherously stared at her body up and down and grinned crazily.
“You didn’t have to go so far, you know? All you had to do was ask, and I would have shown you a real good time-“
“Sellzen. Enough.”
Akeno’s calm but frustrated command made the madman grin even more before giving her a mock salute while Sona, her peerage, and the other girls in the group gave him disgusted looks.
“Alright, fallen bitch. Call me if you want another round of fun. Meanwhile, I’ll go see if there are some strays that I can murder for fun~Hehehe~”
The stray devil licked the sword with a perverted expression, making the devils shudder in disgust as he shot out of the training grounds, searching for his next unfortunate prey.
Akeno channeled the healing properties of her Rosary and expelled the holy energies of the sword as Asia, ever the kind girl, healed the others with her sacred gear.
Normally, if any person from the church ever helped a Devil, no matter the reason, it would be grounds for accusations and being branded a Heretic.
However, thanks to the agreement made between the Church, the Angels, Maniac Ren, Grigori, and the Underworld, Asia and her companions were mostly shielded from the shenanigans of the Church and its petty higher-ups.
Mostly because no one wants an embarrassing political disaster that would undoubtedly arise from crossing anyone within Maniac Ren’s territory.
It also helps that Michael himself gave explicit permission to Asia to heal the Devils and the Fallen should the need arise in front of Xenovia, Irina, and Vasco Strada.
Rias groaned as Asia’s sacred gear healed her wound, expelling the holy energy from her body.
“Seriously, Akeno. Just how did Ren manage to convince a madman like Sellzen to guard you?”
Akeno gave a wry smile towards her king as she clutched her wounded arm, which was starting to heal rapidly.
“I don’t know. But we can’t deny the results, can we?”
Rias did not answer but just nodded seriously at her queen’s words.
In the scant two months they had spent training with the stray exorcist during this summer vacation, Rias and her peerage had already seen a tremendous boost in their skills and power.
Rias had significantly improved her mastery over her Power of Destruction, increasing its speed and potency to another level entirely.
Just based on this improvement alone, she had just from the lower ends of High-Class straight to the pinnacle of High-Class.
And this is not even considering the physical combat skills she had picked up thanks to the constant threat of death she felt whenever she sparred against Freed.
Rias had no doubt that, should she continue training like this, she would reach the Ultimate-Class level in less than a year at most.
A great step towards winning back her freedom from the machinations of her family and the Phenex.
Similarly, her peerage had also gained a significant improvement during their spars with the madman.
Kiba’s swordsmanship had increased to a whole new level. His already extreme skills, taught to him by Sirzechs’s knight, Okita Souji, had increased even more thanks to constant clashes with Freed’s style of swordsmanship, refined from the Siegfried Institute’s teachings.
Along with his sword skills, Kiba had also been forced to adapt and use his Sacred Gear in ways he never thought possible, thanks to the constant threat to his and his friend's lives whenever they clash against Freed.
Koneko had also gained a tremendous boost in her hand-to-hand skills and demonic powers during these clashes.
It's just that Rias thought it a shame that the girl still refuses to use her natural gifts of Senjutsu even now.
However, out of her entire peerage, the one who gained the greatest boost in power was no doubt her queen, Akeno.
Due to her status as his charge and target for protection, Freed was authorized to brutalize Akeno as much as possible by Ren for the sake of strengthening her. However, at the same time, the artifact that Ren gave her acted as a timer for their spars, dictating how far Freed can go in harming Akeno.
If it were minor injuries or those that did not have any kind of energy that could be detrimental to her health, the Rosay would not activate, making Akeno learn to dodge his attacks.
However, if the attacks became even remotely lethal or contained energies that were fatal to the girl, the Rosary would activate instantly and put an end to the spar.
Thanks to this method of training that Akeno took very seriously, her lighting magic, her mastery of demonic energy, her barrier magics, and her physical abilities had already broken through to the peak of the High-class and were swiftly approaching Ultimate-class.
Of course, if only Rias and her peerage were gaining things from these spars, it would not be long before they overwhelmed Freed in power and made their spars meaningless. Especially since Freed was a regular human and did not have the cheat-like advantages of the Devils and the Fallen-hybrid.
So, in his infinite ‘foresight’, Ren had imbued Freed with a few Tantrik spells and gave him a few Touki training techniques.
This meant that as Rias and her peerage learned and became stronger from their spars, Freed did so as well, and arguably, he was the one gaining the most out of their spars since his mastery of Touki had already advanced to ridiculous levels, showing the sheer natural talent he had.
With a sigh, Rias lay back on the ground, contemplating not for the first time if the power she gained was worth all this pain and mental stress.
