Hands - Set One

Some creatives love hands, others hate them. A lot of us simply struggle to feel confident about them. Which camp are you in, at this point in your practice?

I frankly love hands, and I still get tricked by them, depending on the pose. I consider them the next most expressive structure in the body, after the face. Hands have the capacity to illustrate so much, visually, to further the story we are telling on the page, whether in great wrinkly detail or minimally, but powerfully, through gesture.

Either way, they are intricately composed mechanisms with a lot to pay attention to if you want to make them "believable", so practice is never a bad idea.

If you're a beginner, try to stick to basic, general shapes they make as a whole, such as a cone or a triangle, or the angle of the line of action changing between the forearm through the wrist, out the top of the hand. Don't worry about finger nails or knuckle creases yet.

More hands and feet on the horizon!

To make things more inspiring, it's always an option to draw the hands with spells casting out, like some D&D character, if it helps. Have fun.
